New Sony UP-D77MD Delivers Images with Clinical Precision

23 January 2006

Basingstoke, 23 January 2006. Sony today announced the availability of its UP-D77MD colour imager designed solely for medical use. This latest addition extends the Sony printer range and continues the company's success in the market. It marks another key milestone for Sony: the availability of a device that brings higher-quality printing direct to the clinician's desktop and is further evidence of Sony's increasing success in the healthcare arena.

FASTER AND BETTER THAN MONOLITHIC PRINTING SYSTEMS

The traditional workflow for producing diagnostic images entailed producing output centrally. This was a very time-consuming process for both the patient - who would have to wait while these images were printed - and the clinician. Also, the quality of the output from these devices was often poor. Sony's new breed of desktop clinical printers represents a step forward in printing quality and convenience within the healthcare environment.

The Sony UP-D77MD is a small footprint, A4/letter size dye-sublimation printer that can be deployed into a range of diagnostic applications. Its uses include 3D computer tomography, volume rendering Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/PET-CT and ultrasound imaging.

Ludger Philippsen, Product Marketing Manager, Sony Professional Solutions Europe, said the success of the Sony's medical printer range is attributable to the benefits that hospitals are achieving: "the printer line provides an ideal companion to the new diagnostic and treatment technologies being deployed in European hospitals today. Products like the UP-D77MD increase treatment efficiency by reducing the time it takes to produce printed diagnostic materials. We look forward to building on our success with products like this latest imaging device, as well as healthcare-specific high definition solutions in the years to come."

SUPPORTING THE DIGITAL WORKFLOW

As institutions continue to migrate from paper-based systems to digital workflows to secure greater operational efficiency, there is an increased need for technology that supports established standards for information interchange in the medical environment. Sony is a key advocate of the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard. The UP-D77MD printer provides full support for networked systems thanks to its embedded DICOM interface.

Whatever the diagnostic environment, the Sony UP-D77MD delivers superior image quality, speed and stability. In the healthcare environment, colour reproduction and control is critical to the accuracy of diagnosis. The UP-D77MD provides precise colour calibration, which enables the user to generate full colour output in less than 90 seconds and also helps reduce in-patient waiting times as well as enable medical professionals to reduce diagnosis time. The new imager can also safeguard the integrity of usability of medical images. The dye-sublimation and lamination techniques provided by the UP-D77MD, ensures the longevity of printed results, which gives the output a shelf-life of years, not months.

The Sony UP-D77MD is available now and is competitively priced. Please visit the Sony website for more details.
