Nonin Medical Announces Entry Into the Cerebral Oximeter Market

13 August 2008

Nonin Medical, a leading innovator of physiological monitoring solutions for more than 20 years, has entered the clinical testing phase with its breakthrough technology to measure regional oxygen saturation. Today’s most common application for this technology is the continuous monitoring of the regional blood oxygenation in the brain – cerebral oximetry.

Early testing data and outcomes from an ongoing clinical study at the Duke University Medical Centre have yielded favourable results. These data results support the objective to simplify sensor application whilst improving the usefulness of the measurement.

For over two decades, Nonin Medical has remained at the forefront of non-invasive physiological monitoring with specific focus on highly effective signal processing and the advancement of innovative pulse oximeter products. With the introduction of the Onyx®, the world’s first fingertip pulse oximeter, Nonin Medical changed the global market for oximetry. Today, Nonin Medical has the largest installed base of pulse oximeters in the industry with well over one million units worldwide.

“This invaluable clinical and technical experience combined with a vision for the future has enabled us to develop a product that promises to advance the field of patient monitoring, once again,” said Gary Tschautscher, CEO and President of Nonin Medical. “We understand the immense pressure on the healthcare market to reduce the cost of patient care while providing new, more effective, yet simple solutions. Our newly developed sensor and patented signal processing technology is designed to deliver on these objectives.”

The advanced modular design of this new technology permits future expansion of functionality, while also permitting product and data integration into other monitoring systems. This clearly aligns with Nonin Medical’s vision for interoperability and facilitating information flow without the need of proprietary interfaces. “We must leave the old business models of protectionism behind, “said Tschautscher. “This is one reason why Nonin Medical is actively supporting and driving open communication standards.”
