MAQUET set for further international expansion with products and solutions for operating rooms and intensive care units

MAQUET GmbH & Co. KG, which belongs to the Swedish publicly-listed group GETINGE AB and is headquartered in Rastatt, is seeing further expansion with its three divisions Surgical Workplaces, Critical Care and Cardiovascular in 30 subsidiaries and more than 200 sales partners worldwide. With its roots in surgical infrastructure for clinics and hospitals MAQUET is developing into a full-therapy medical technology company.

The dynamism of the company MAQUET is also reflected in the development of the number of personnel and the sales figures: since the take-over of the company by GETINGE in the year 2000 the number of employees has nearly trebled from 1,400 to 4,100 at the end of the past 2007 fiscal year, including the acquisition of Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery from Boston Scientific Corporation. The sales developed accordingly, from 154 million euros to €850 million(pro forma).

"Alone in December 2007 the company posted sales figures that less than a decade ago would have equated to the annual sales," is how Dr Heribert Ballhaus, Chairman of the Management, describes the company's progress. With a return in sales of 17% (2007) MAQUET is outperforming other internationally significant medical technology manufacturers. In the future the MAQUET strategy will be oriented to organic growth and growth through acquisitions.

The number of production facilities has also increased. MAQUET produces in Rastatt, Hirrlingen, Hechingen (Germany), Ardon (France), Solna (Sweden), Antalya (Turkey), Suzhou (China), Sao Paulo (Brazil), Wayne, NJ (USA) and Dorado (Puerto Rico).

With its business areas Medical Systems, Infection Control and Extended Care, GETINGE AB ranks among the top 25 companies in medical technology worldwide. Through strategic acquisitions for the Medical Systems business area, such as MAQUET itself by RWE, ALM (Air Liquide), Heraeus Med (Heraeus Group), JOSTRA and SIEMENS Life Supporting Systems (SIEMENS), it has been possible to position MAQUET as a successful global player.

"All these acquired divisions were fringe business areas for the industrial companies listed above. We have developed these into our core business and know how to successfully integrate ¡§unwanted children¡¨ into a family," is how Dr Heribert Ballhaus, the chairman of the management, describes the success story of the MAQUET Group. "We are now definitely playing in the Champions League with the other major medical technology manufacturers," adds Dr Ballhaus.

In particular with the take-over in January 2008 from Boston Scientific Corporation of its Cardiac und Vascular Surgery business areas MAQUET is completing the move from simply being a provider of products and solutions to becoming a partner for full-therapy concepts for the operating room and intensive care unit.

The excellently coordinated products and solutions of MAQUET are specially developed for the optimum medical treatment of patients in hospitals. MAQUET offers innovative medical solutions in three divisions:

  • Surgical Workplaces - equipment for surgical workplaces
  • Cardiovascular - Products and solutions for cardio and vascular surgery
  • Critical Care - Anesthesia and ventilation systems

At the heart of the company is the Surgical Workplaces division, which is responsible for the production and marketing of surgical tables, surgical lights, ceiling supply units, modular ORs and the area of telemedicine. As of January 2008 MAQUET also took over the marketing for this product range in the USA - which had been controlled by US office of the group parent GETINGE AB until the end of 2007. For the current year the company expects to see a double-digit growth rate in this region.

With the creation of the new Cardiovascular division - the amalgamation of MAQUET Cardiopulmonary AG with the Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery business areas of Boston Scientific Corporation - MAQUET has been expanding globally since the beginning of 2008 into the market for medical applications and products for the treatment of cardio-vascular diseases, one which is characterized by strong growth and earnings.

The portfolio of MAQUET Cardiovascular is being expanded with the acquisition of perfusion systems and disposable products for heart surgery incl. products for endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH), anastomosis, stabilisators and instruments for surgical intervention on the beating heart, as well as applications for aortal and thoracic aneurysms.

At the same time, with the take-over of the Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery areas extensive synergy effects in the international distribution of the division are coming to bear: While the product range of MAQUET Cardiopulmonary AG in Hirrlingen has been successfully placed on the market above all in Europe, Asia and South America, the products now purchased from Boston Scientific Corporation are well placed in the USA.

With the Critical Care division MAQUET focuses on the development of innovative flexible solutions and concepts for ventilation, and in the future also for anesthesia. As the global market leader in the field of ventilation MAQUET offers NAVA (Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist) technology, a unique approach to mechanical ventilation which allows the patient's breathing center to take control of ventilation, thus enhancing the synchronicity between patient and ventilation device.

As of summer 2009 it is firmly expected that the anesthesia device FLOW-i will be offered for the first time in selected countries. This device is noted for its user- and patient-friendly fittings, and above also for its economic efficiency. Thus, with the new adsorber technology some of the gas used in narcosis can be recycled, thereby minimizing the follow-up costs.
