Source of Payment Typology Code Set Implementation by States
This 2009 white paper from the US Public Health Data Standards Commission deals with the issues involved in payment for medical services in the US.
The source of payment typology, developed by the Public Health Data Standards Consortium, addresses current limitations, enabling better support of research or policy analysis purpose.
It concludes that existing payer type codes limit certain types of data analysis and the previous payer type coding lists are neither mutually exclusive nor comprehensive.
The hierarchical structure is the main reason for choosing the typology, but the existence of a comprehensive definition of terms is another advantage.
Currently, the states of Georgia, Oregon, New York and California are working towards implementing the typology.
