Hospitals and life science institutions solutions provider Getinge has added Artificial Intelligence (AI) functionality to its Torin OR management software in the US.

Launched last year, Torin helps improve surgery planning, management and optimisation, as well as using resources efficiently.

With a new set of advanced capabilities, Torin AI will be capable of rapidly enhancing scheduling surgical procedures’ speed and efficiency.

The software can accurately calculate surgical procedure timing taking into account various factors including surgery type, patient data, relevant devices and staffing.

Additionally, the solution grades pending procedures using clinical and resource parameters to tackle scheduling backlogs and recommends enhanced pre-schedules.

Getinge Integrated Workflow Solutions vice-president Charlotte Enlund said: “The new capabilities now available with Torin are specifically designed to help hospitals and surgery centres address many areas that are major challenges, including accurate assessments of surgery times, scheduling and wait list management, applications of mobile devices and data security requirements based on their specific pre-requisites.”

In addition, Getinge has announced results of a survey conducted to study the effect of surgical backlogs amid the increasing patient demand due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The survey was conducted by the company last month with participation of 60 senior executives and surgeons from hospitals in the US.

Getinge’s data revealed that 41% of hospitals experienced a surgical backlog, with long-term acute care and outpatient surgery settings reporting higher levels of delays.

About 44% of hospitals reported the use of advanced digital tools to improve proficiency in OR scheduling and patient management.

Enlund added: “For long term acute care facilities, which our study found to be extraordinarily challenged by surgical backlog, we are happy to offer support with Torin OptimalQ, our stand-alone tool, for quick relief in planning and optimising the waiting list.”
