It explains how social media can benefit healthcare in many ways, such as fostering professional connections, promoting timely communication with patients and family members and educating and informing consumers and health care professionals.
It notes that nurses need to be aware of the limitations of disclosing patient-related information via social media and points out the outcomes of different scenarios relating to inappropriate uses of social and electronic media.
The paper also details the possible consequences for inappropriate use of social and electronic media by a nurse and the guidelines intended to reduce the risks of using social media.
