Digital data management and hospital-wide access to medical images of any type (DICOM; Non-DICOM) is a common standard in many hospitals today. Unfortunately, the major issue for clinical users is that on the one hand they have to deal with different information systems, depending on the information needed, and on the other, these IT systems are merely or not at all connected to each other. A result of this is that a considerable time effort is needed for the input of redundant data (e.g. patient data, passwords etc.).

This article describes a finalized project at the regional hospital &#96;Ospidal d'Engiadina Bassa' (OEB) in Scuol, Switzerland. </div>

Solvay's Third International Forum on Advanced Parkinson's Disease took place in an unseasonably wet Seville, yet this did not dampen delegates' spirits. Attendance was up again on last year with more than 200 people from 24 countries, from as far afield as the US, Russia and Australia: approximately double the number who attended the first forum in Portugal, two years ago.

EPDA President Stephen Pickard (Belgium) opened the proceedings, updating the audience about the projects underway at the Association to help involve patients in the decision-making process surrounding their own treatment.

Next, Jose Obeso (Spain) treated delegates to an early lesson in Parkinson's pathology and the evolution of the disease, followed by Mary Baker (UK), who presented an overview of the challenges posed by brain diseases and how to meet them in the 21st century. </div>

Through the acquisition of Matritech, Inverness Medical now offers the NMP22&#174; BladderChek&#174; Test and NMP22&#174; test kit for the rapid diagnosis and monitoring of early stage bladder cancer.

More commonly seen in men than women at a ratio of 3:1 1, bladder cancer is commonly linked to smoking and exposure to industrial chemicals, with approximately 356,600 new cases of bladder cancer reported worldwide each year.

Simple to use, the rapid BladderChek test can be performed outside of the laboratory with reliable results available during a single patient visit in just 30 minutes. Requiring only four drops of urine, the test is unaffected by the presence of blood in the sample which is commonly seen as one of the first symptoms of bladder cancer. </div>

Outline planning permission for the construction of a new South Holland Hospital was agreed in the April 2005. This was a considerable achievement in the light of the many difficulties encountered in getting planning permission for the site.

The new building is being built as part of the Government's PFI initiative on the 11-acre site at Spalding road. Construction will begin in October 2006 with completion due in 2007 / early 2008.

Health Services in Spalding are currently located in four sites and in all cases the accommodation is unsuitable and inadequate. The new hospital will bring all the NHS organisations together on one site and will provide the most modern facilities for the care and treatment of patients. </div>

The Geraldton Regional Hospital Redevelopment project, Western Australia, will create a modern hospital with comprehensive infrastructure and facilities when completed in June 2006. The Department of Health, Western Australia Government, is sponsoring the AU&#36;43.6 million project, for which Broad Construction Services Pty Ltd was awarded the contract for construction. The first stage was completed between January 2004 and July 2005 and the second phase is in progress. The ongoing new project is located between the existing hospital and Shenton Street.

The lifespan of the original multi-storey hospital building, which was built in 1960s, is almost over and the old building is unable to cope with the increasing demand for better hospital services. </div>

William Osler Healthcare Group is building a new hospital facility in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, to operate as an open public hospital and general healthcare centre. William Osler Health Centre provides health services to the residents of Ontario. As the population is growing at the rate of 30,000 new residents annually, there are increasing requirements for health services, which resulted in a need for the new hospital.

The CA&#36;550 million project comprises the design, construction and commissioning of a 608-bed hospital which is likely to be the first public-private partnership model project in the region. </div>
