CorMatrix Reports Positive Study Results of Pericardial Closure Implant

28 October 2010

CorMatrix Cardiovascular has reported positive study results of its extracellular matrix (ECM) technology, an implant used to reconstruct the pericardium.

The study was conducted by physicians from Mobile Infirmary Medical Center and Trinity Medical Center in the US, and was designed to evaluate if ECM reduced the rate of new onset postoperative atrial fibrillation.

It compared 111 patients who received the ECM after undergoing primary isolated coronary artery bypass grafting with 111 patients who were not given the implant after undergoing the same procedure.

The results showed that new onset postoperative atrial fibrillation occurred in 43 of the 111 patients who did not receive the ECM compared to 20 of the 111 patients who did, which represents a 54% decrease in relative risk in the treatment group.

The implant has received conditional approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.
