University Hospitals in Ohio, US, will offer $99 lung cancer screening tests at its Seidman Cancer Center using spiral CT.
The scan, a rapid and non-invasive test uses low doses of radiation to generate 3D images, is not covered by insurance and usually costs over $300.
The National Cancer Institute has found that spiral CT detects malignant tumours and nodules earlier, reducing the risk from lung cancer by 20% in middle-aged and elderly smokers.
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Surgery associate professor Philip Linden said current and former smokers would benefit from a spiral CT.
