US Surgeons Implant Artificial Lung in Toddler

21 June 2011

Physicians and surgeons at Washington University in the US have successfully implanted an artificial lung in a toddler.

The artificial lung, made by Novalung in Germany, is a small box that is attached through a shunt created between the main pulmonary artery and the left atrium of the heart.

The organ works without a pump, using the heartbeat to circulate blood.
