Researchers at Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia have received a $1.2m grant from the National Science Foundation's Smart Health and Wellbeing Program to develop a portable fall prediction and monitoring system.
The project will develop a monitoring system, named 'ROOP-Alert', which will bridge gait and posture analysis, body sensor networks, low-power radio frequency wireless communication and gerontology.
Data collected by the monitor would be sent wirelessly to a monitoring station, such as the nurse's office at a nursing home,to help health professionals identify those at risk.
