St Peter's Hospital in Surrey, UK, has opened a nine-bed special care unit for mothers and their babies, replacing a six-bed transitional care unit.
The unit will be managed by the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and is believed to manage it including transitional care, special care babies with monitoring access to IV fluids and a treatment room.
Sister Therese Nursey, who is leading the unit, said that the it is intended to keep mother and baby together when the baby needs extra special care.
"Subsequently this promotes earlier discharge, so less time is spent in hospital, and also prevents unnecessary admissions to the neonatal intensive care unit."
