The number of patients in NHS hospitals undergoing stomach reduction surgery for obesity has increased ten-fold since 2000, according to new research.
The British Medical Journal reports that stomach reduction operations have risen from 283 in 2000 to more than 2,500 in 2007.
NHS spends about £4.2bn a year treating health conditions related to obesity.
Stomach reduction surgery includes gastric banding and gastric bypasses, which increase patient’s feeling of fullness.
