The first proton therapy unit in the US state of Illinois has been opened at Central DuPage Hospital.
Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation treatment for cancer that spares healthy tissue, has fewer side-effects and has been shown to be effective in treating a broad range of tumour types, including complex tumours.
The ProCure Center, the ninth such centre in the US, will be able to treat 1,500 patients a year once it becomes fully operational.
