The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) trauma centre in New Delhi has developed and installed an automated surveillance system, which has cut hospital-acquired infections by 50%.
The automated surveillance of hospital acquired infections (ASHAIN) software is designed to identify, track and calculate all device-associated infections with accuracy.
AIIMS Trauma Centre laboratory science associate professor Purva Mathur was quoted by The Hindustan Times as saying that the hospital collects all the patient data manually on a day-to-day basis.
"Using the installed software, we study the trends," Mathur said. "The software helps us to identify the infections and track them. We then work to help correct the cause of infection."
The technology, funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), will direct preventive activities and check the rate of hospital acquired infections, based on criteria defined by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC).
The technology monitors each indoor patient from the time of admission for the development of infections, health centre officials said.
