US-based MercyRockford Health System has unveiled plans to develop one hospital on two campuses in Rockford and the greater northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin region, with an investment of $400m.

MercyRockford plans to continue operating a robust hospital campus on its current N Rockton Avenue site.

In addition, MercyRockford intends to build a second campus on 263 acres at the intersection of E Riverside Boulevard and the I-90 interstate highway.

"N Rockton Avenue campus will include 94 adult inpatient hospital beds, a comprehensive emergency department and a convenient care walk-in clinic."

MercyRockford Health System was formed through the merger of Mercy Health System and Rockford Health System in January.

MercyRockford Health System president Javon Bea said: "MercyRockford Health System is embarking on the most exciting and impactful healthcare development in the 130 years since our two original hospitals were founded.

"This is the largest project ever in Rockford’s history and represents a leap forward in quality facilities, community economic growth and easy access from a large regional area."
