Robinson Health System and University Hospitals (UH) in Cleveland have signed a letter of intent to fully integrate Robinson Memorial, a 117-bed hospital located in Ravenna, Ohio, with the University Hospitals’ health system.

Robinson Memorial also operates an urgent care facility and multiple outpatient centres throughout Portage County and is the county’s second largest employer.

The evaluation process is expected to last several months and the two entities anticipate reaching a final agreement by 31 May 2014, with an effective date subject to regulatory approval.

Robinson Memorial president and CEO Stephen Colecchi said the hospital completed a comprehensive process to evaluate potential organisations that could support its mission to provide high-quality, patient-centred health care to its patients and the communities that it serves.

"We strongly believe that becoming part of UH will be a dynamic and important change for Robinson and is in the best interests of our patients, the Portage County community, our employees and medical staff," Colecchi said.

UH will work closely with the Robinson Memorial medical staff to ensure that their patients continue to receive the highest quality medical care.

It is anticipated that UH’s collaboration will bring investments and new services, as a major benefit to the new agreement.

UH, with its nationally recognised academic medical centre, UH Case Medical Centre, will also provide strong clinical research, leading-edge technology, innovative practises and initiatives that will complement and boost Robinson Memorial’s medical programmes.

UH CEO Thomas F. Zenty III said the hospital group expects the in-depth analysis currently being undertaken to confirm that the organisations will best serve the residents of Portage County and all of Northeast Ohio together.

"Robinson Memorial Hospital is a vital anchor institution in the communities that they serve and we are honoured to have this opportunity to join with their leadership and medical staff in advancing innovation, superior quality health care and patient-centred care close to home," Zenty III said.

UH currently employs more than 25,000 Northeast Ohio residents. It recently integrated Elyria Memorial Hospital and Parma Community General Hospital, and now has a total of 14 hospitals and 26 outpatient health centres throughout the region.
