The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust in the UK has announced that construction firm Carillion has achieved financial close on a new £335m hospital project.

In May 2013, the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust selected Carillion to deliver the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital under a public private partnership (PPP).

Carillion will build the hospital and deliver non-clinical support services expected to be worth £100m over the 30 years of its contract.

Carillion will invest £15.5m in the project, alongside Scottish Widows Investment Partnership which will invest a similar amount, and expects to generate £200m in revenue from the investment.

Work is due to start early in 2014 and the 646-bed hospital is scheduled for completion in 2017.

The new hospital will be equipped with a 40-bed critical care unit, 18 theatres and one of the largest emergency departments in the north-west region.

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust CEO Aidan Kehoe said the trust is delighted to have achieved financial close on the new Royal.

"We will have a world-class hospital facility designed to provide a whole new approach to healthcare and help us to tackle some of our region’s biggest health issues," Kehoe added.

The new hospital will be built next to the existing hospital, which will be demolished once services have been transferred.

The new hospital will have an underground car park for patients and visitors, and buses will come onto the site, providing better and easier access to the hospital. There will be a dedicated cycle centre and ten electric car charging points.

"We will have a world-class hospital facility designed to provide a whole new approach to healthcare and help us to tackle some of our region’s biggest health issues."

The hospital will be developed as a green project with renewable energy systems, low carbon technology, water meters and leak detection systems.

The project will also pave the way for a world-class Liverpool BioCampus on the site of the current hospital, which will play a key part in transforming the area and regenerating the Knowledge Quarter of the city.

The construction of the new hospital is expected to contribute around £240m to the local economy, creating the equivalent of some 750 full-time jobs during the construction period, with 60% of these jobs going to local people.

There is also a commitment to source at least 60% of materials locally. Fifteen percent of the workforce will come from priority Council Wards in the city and 100 apprenticeships will be created.

Carillion CEO Richard Howson said the company is delighted to have achieved financial close on the project, which will be its 16th PPP hospital in the UK.

"We look forward to working in partnership with the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust to deliver a state-of-the-art hospital that will bring substantial benefits to the people of Liverpool," Howson added.
