Top ten largest hospitals in Arizona by bed size in 2021

The cities of Phoenix and Tucson are each home to three of the ten biggest general hospitals in the state of Arizona while the remaining top four hospitals are in Glendale, Mesa, Sun City and Scottsdale.

Hospital Management has listed Arizona’s top ten largest hospitals based on bed size in 2021, using GlobalData’s research.

1. Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix – 755 beds

The Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix, formerly called the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, is the biggest hospital in Arizona, with 755 beds.

Located in Phoenix, the multi-speciality teaching and research hospital is affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine and is the largest medical and surgical facility of Banner Health, a non-profit academic health system that merged with the University of Arizona Health Network in Tucson, Arizona, to form Banner-University Medicine in February 2015.

The Banner-University Medical Center Phoenix is rated as high-performing in three adult specialities, including gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, geriatrics, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

2. Banner-University Medical Center Tucson – 649 beds

The Banner-University Medical Center Tucson is the second biggest hospital in Arizona, with 649 beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital provides comprehensive heart and cancer care, and advanced neurological and organ transplantation services. It also houses the only Level I trauma centre in southern Arizona.

The Banner-University Medical Center Tucson is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, colon and lung cancer surgery, as well as stroke management and pneumonia.

3. Tucson Medical Center – 641 beds

Tucson Medical Center is a multi-speciality, general acute care hospital in Tuscon with 641 beds.

Affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine, it is the flagship hospital campus of TMC HealthCare, a locally governed non-profit health system based in southern Arizona. The hospital is renowned for emergency and paediatric care. It also specialises in maternity, cardiac, orthopaedic, neurological, vascular and geropsychiatric care.

Tucson Medical Center is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, stroke management, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and knee and hip replacement.

4. St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center – 595 beds

St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is a 595-bed general acute care hospital in Phoenix.

It is affiliated with the University of Arizona College of Medicine and is part of Dignity Health, a non-profit healthcare system that operates more than 40 hospitals in Arizona, California and Nevada. The hospital houses a Level I trauma centre and the internationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute.

St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is nationally ranked in the adult speciality of neurology and neurosurgery. It is also rated as high-performing in the specialities of geriatrics, and gastroenterology and GI surgery.

5. Valleywise Health Medical Center – 555 beds

Valleywise Health Medical Center, formerly called the Maricopa Medical Center, is a 555-bed general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital in Phoenix.

Affiliated with the Creighton University Medical School, it is the flagship hospital campus of Valleywise Health, a non-profit academic health system based in the Phoenix area.

Valleywise Health Medical Center is a multi-speciality hospital housing a Level I trauma centre, a Level III newborn intensive care unit (NICU), as well as Arizona’s only nationally verified burn centre.

6. Banner Thunderbird Medical Center – 555 beds

The Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is a 555-bed general acute care hospital located in Glendale, Arizona.

Run by the non-profit academic health system, Banner Health, the multi-speciality hospital houses a Level I adult trauma centre and provides medical and surgical care across a range of specialities.

The Banner Thunderbird Medical Center is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, maternity care and stroke management.

7. Banner Desert Medical Center – 549 beds

The Banner Desert Medical Center, located in Mesa, is a general medical and surgical facility having 549 beds.

It is operated by Banner Health and serves as a tertiary referral centre for the East Valley of metropolitan Phoenix. The hospital provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical care across a wide range of specialities such as cancer care, neurology, diabetes, rehabilitation, organ transplantation and robotic surgery.

The Banner Desert Medical Center is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart attack, diabetes, kidney failure, colon cancer surgery, stroke management and maternity care.

8. Banner Boswell Medical Center – 501 beds

The Banner Boswell Medical Center is a 501-bed general acute care hospital in Sun City, Maricopa County.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is operated by Banner Health and is recognised for clinical excellence in the field of cardiology, neurology and orthopaedics.

The Banner Boswell Medical Center is nationally ranked in the adult speciality of rehabilitation and is rated as high-performing in the speciality of geriatrics.

9. Carondelet St Joseph’s Hospital – 486 beds

Carondelet St Joseph’s Hospital, located in Tucson, is a multi-speciality medical and surgical facility that has 486 beds.

It is the largest of the four general acute care hospitals operated by Carondelet Health Network, a non-profit healthcare provider based in Tucson. The hospital is designated as a Level I trauma and comprehensive stroke centre. It also houses a Level II NICU, a 30-bed neuro inpatient care centre and an advanced robotic surgical centre.

Carondelet St Joseph’s Hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to colon cancer surgery, kidney failure, stroke management and COPD.  

10. HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center – 427 beds

The HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center is a 4271-bed general medical and surgical facility located in Scottsdale, Arizona.

It is the largest of the six hospitals operated by HonorHealth, a non-profit health system in Arizona. Scottsdale Shea Medical Center is recognised for women’s health, cardiology, orthopaedics, neurology, oncology and bariatric surgical services.

The hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to colon cancer surgery, knee replacement and COPD.
