The state of Queensland houses the two biggest hospitals in Australia by bed size while New South Wales and Western Australia are each home to three of the ten biggest general hospitals in the country. The remaining top two hospitals are in South Australia and Victoria.

1. Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital – 1,000 beds
The 1,000-bed Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, a tertiary referral hospital in Herston, an inner suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, is the biggest hospital in Australia.
The multi-speciality teaching and research hospital is owned by the Queensland Government and is run by Metro North Health, the largest of the 16 hospital and health services (HHS) providing public health services in Queensland.
Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital specialises in an extensive range of clinical areas. It is renowned for its cancer care, maternity, trauma, and burn care services.
2. Gold Coast University Hospital – 930 beds
The Gold Coast University Hospital, located in Southport, the coastal suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, is the second biggest hospital in Australia, with 930 beds.
It is the flagship hospital campus of Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service of the Queensland Government. The public teaching and clinical research hospital comprises seven main buildings, with a total floor space of 170,000m².
Gold Coast University Hospital provides emergency and trauma services, children’s and women’s health care services, and oral and mental health services, along with medical and surgical services in 52 specialities.
3. Hollywood Private Hospital – 900 beds
The Hollywood Private Hospital, located in Nedlands, a western suburb of Perth, Western Australia, is a general acute care hospital having 900 beds.
The multi-speciality teaching hospital is owned and operated by Ramsay Health Care, Australia’s largest private hospital operator that runs 72 private hospitals and day surgery units in the country.
Hollywood Private Hospital offers a wide range of specialities, from general medicine and clinical microbiology to neurosurgery and vascular surgery. It is home to an advanced mental health clinic called Ramsay Clinic Hollywood. The private hospital is also recognised as a premier centre for cancer treatment in Perth.
4. Royal Adelaide Hospital – 800 beds
The 800-bed Royal Adelaide Hospital, located at Port Rd, Adelaide, is the largest public hospital in South Australia.
The multi-speciality teaching hospital forms part of the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN), which is one of the 11 public health networks governed by the Department of Health and Wellbeing, Government of South Australia.
Royal Adelaide Hospital provides a wide range of speciality medical care to an estimated 85,000 inpatients and 400,000 outpatients a year.
5. Westmead Hospital – 800 beds
The Westmead Hospital, located in Westmead, a suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, also has 800 beds. It is the major tertiary referral hospital for western Sydney.
The hospital is part of the Westmead Health and Education, one of the largest health, education, research and training precincts in Australia that provides health services to 10% of the country’s population through four major hospitals, three research institutes, and two university campuses.
Westmead Hospital specialises in a comprehensive range of treatment areas, including trauma care, bone marrow and renal transplant, oncology, cardiology, neurosurgery and neonatal intensive care.
6. Fiona Stanley Hospital – 783 beds
The 783-bed Fiona Stanley Hospital is a public teaching hospital owned by the Department of Health, Government of Western Australia.
Located in Murdoch, a suburb of Perth, it is run by Fiona Stanley Fremantle Hospitals Group (FSFHG) of the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS), a public health care provider in southern metropolitan Perth. FSFHG also includes the Fremantle Hospital and the Rottnest Island Nursing Post.
Fiona Stanley Hospital serves as a multi-speciality tertiary hospital providing comprehensive inpatient medical and surgical services for patients of all ages in the southern Perth metropolitan region. It is recognised as one of the best hospitals in Western Australia for adult burn care, lung and bone marrow transplantation, mental health and rehabilitation, as well as maternity, paediatric and neonatal services.
7. Concord Repatriation General Hospital – 750 beds
The Concord Repatriation General Hospital, located in Concord, an inner-western suburb of Sydney, is a 750-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Sydney.
The multi-speciality general medical and surgical facility forms part of the Sydney Local Health District of the New South Wales Government. It is renowned for burns care, colorectal and laparoscopic surgery, gastroenterology and palliative care.
The hospital is undergoing a $341m expansion project to add new clinical services building and provide new aged care, rehabilitation, cancer, and veterans’ care services.
8. Joondalup Health Campus – 722 beds
The Joondalup Health Campus, located in Joondalup, a northern suburb of Perth, Western Australia, comprises a public and a private hospital, with a total of 722 beds.
The 146-bed new Joondalup Private Hospital opened next to the pre-existing public hospital on the campus in March 2013. Ramsay Health Care manages the Joondalup Health Campus, under a public-private partnership agreement with the Westen Australia Government.
Joondalup Health Campus provides both public and private inpatient medical care to more than 72,000 patients a year. The health campus is undergoing a $256.7m expansion to add a 102-bed new mental health unit and a 12-bed new emergency department by early 2025.
9. Sydney Adventist Hospital – 700 beds
The Sydney Adventist Hospital is a 700-bed general acute care private hospital located on Fox Valley Road in Wahroonga, a suburb in the Upper North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
The multi-speciality general medical and surgical facility is the flagship hospital campus of not-for-profit health care organisation Adventist HealthCare.
Sydney Adventist Hospital provides comprehensive cancer care and is known for advanced robotic surgery, as well as complex cardiac and minimally invasive surgery.
10. Monash Medical Centre – 640 beds
The Monash Medical Centre is a 640-bed multi-speciality teaching and research hospital in Clayton, a suburb of Melbourne.
