Top ten largest hospitals in Colorado by bed size in 2021

Hospital Management has listed Colorado's ten largest hospitals based on bed size as of last year, using GlobalData’s research.

The city of Denver is home to five of the ten largest general hospitals in the US state of Colorado. The remaining top five hospitals are located in Aurora, Colorado Springs, Englewood, Greeley and Pueblo.

1. Presbyterian-St Luke’s Medical Centre – 680 beds

The Presbyterian-St Luke’s Medical Center in Denver is Colorado’s biggest hospital, with 680 beds.

The multi-speciality hospital is run by HealthONE, the largest healthcare system in the Denver metropolitan area and a subsidiary of non-profit health system HCA Healthcare.

Presbyterian-St Luke’s Medical Centre is rated as high-performing in the adult speciality of cancer care, as well as procedures and conditions related to cardiac arrest, back surgery, stroke management and pneumonia.

2. UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital – 678 beds

The UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, Colorado, is the state’s second largest hospital, featuring a total of 678 beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is the flagship medical campus of UCHealth, a non-profit health organisation based in Colorado.

UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital is nationally ranked in eight adult specialities. These are cancer care, diabetes and endocrinology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, rehabilitation, rheumatology, and urology.

3. Denver Health Medical Centre – 555 beds

The Denver Health Medical Centre in Denver’s Lincoln Park neighbourhood is a general acute care teaching hospital with 555 inpatient beds.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is home to the Rocky Mountain Regional Level I Trauma Centre, one of five Level I trauma centres in Colorado.

Denver Health Medical Centre is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to pneumonia.

4. Rose Medical Centre – 420 beds

The Rose Medical Centre in Denver is a general medical and surgical facility licensed for 420 inpatient beds.

The multi-speciality hospital is run by HCA Healthcare’s HealthONE subsidiary and is recognised for clinical excellence in women’s health, heart and vascular care, as well as sports medicine, total joint replacement, and bariatric, thyroid and aesthetic surgery.

Rose Medical Centre is also rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to spinal fusion surgery.

5. UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central – 413 beds

The UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central is a 413-bed general acute care hospital located in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Operated by non-profit health organisation UCHealth, the multi-speciality hospital is designated as a Level I trauma centre and houses the only comprehensive stroke centre in southern Colorado.

UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central is rated as high-performing in the adult speciality of orthopaedics and in procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, maternity care, stroke management and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

6. Swedish Medical Centre – 408 beds

The Swedish Medical Centre is a 408-bed general acute care hospital located in Englewood, Colorado.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is run by HealthONE, the largest healthcare system in the Denver metropolitan area. It is designated as a Level I trauma and comprehensive stroke centre.

The hospital is rated as high-performing in the neurology and neurosurgery speciality, as well as procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure.

7. SCL Health Saint Joseph Hospital – 400 beds

The SCL Health Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver is a general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital with 400 inpatient beds.

It is one of eight hospitals operated by SCL Health, a non-profit health system based in Colorado. SCL Health merged with the Utah-based Intermountain Healthcare in April this year.

SCL Health Saint Joseph Hospital is rated as high-performing in the adult pulmonology and lung surgery speciality, as well as procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, aortic valve and heart bypass surgery, lung and colon cancer surgery, maternity care, stroke management, COPD, and hip and knee replacement.

8. North Colorado Medical Centre – 378 beds

The North Colorado Medical Centre is a 378-bed general acute care hospital in Greeley, Colorado. It is operated by Banner Health, a non-profit health system based in Phoenix, Arizona.

The multi-speciality hospital is designated as a Level I trauma centre and is recognised for clinical excellence in burn and trauma care. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to kidney failure, stroke management, maternity care and pneumonia.

9. Porter Adventist Hospital – 368 beds

The Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver is a multi-speciality medical and surgical facility with 368 licensed beds.

It is owned and operated by Centura Health, a faith-based, non-profit healthcare organisation that serves people across Colorado and western Kansas. The hospital admits more than 7,000 patients and handles more than 16,000 emergency visits each year.

The hospital specialises in joint replacement, spine surgery, organ transplant, behavioural health, cancer care and innovative cardiac treatments. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, as well as hip and knee replacement.

10. Parkview Medical Centre – 350 beds

The Parkview Medical Centre in Pueblo is a private, non-profit hospital with 350 licensed beds. It is certified as a Level II trauma and stroke centre.

The multi-speciality acute care facility is recognised for clinical excellence in cardiac, women’s health, emergency, neurological and behavioural health services. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, stroke management and pneumonia.
