Top ten largest hospitals in Connecticut by bed size in 2021

Connecticut's ten largest general hospitals range in numbers of beds from 347 to 1,541 as of last year.

The cities of Hartford, Bridgeport and Waterbury are each home to two of Connecticut’s ten largest general hospitals, with the state’s remaining top four hospitals located in New Haven, Danbury, New Britain and Norwalk.

Hospital Management has listed Connecticut’s ten largest hospitals based on numbers of beds as of last year, using GlobalData’s research.

1. Yale New Haven Hospital – 1,541 beds

The Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven is Connecticut’s largest hospital, with 1,541 inpatient beds.

Operated by non-profit health system Yale New Haven Health, the tertiary medical centre specialises in more than 100 clinical areas and serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine.

The multi-speciality healthcare complex also includes the Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital and the Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital.

Yale New Haven Hospital is nationally ranked in nine adult specialities. These are diabetes and endocrinology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, urology, and pulmonology and lung surgery. The hospital is also nationally ranked in eight key paediatric specialities, including neonatology, cancer care and nephrology.

2. Hartford Hospital – 867 beds

The Hartford Hospital in Hartford is the second largest hospital in Connecticut, with 867 licensed beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital and tertiary care centre is affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. It is also the flagship medical campus of non-profit health system Hartford HealthCare, which operates seven acute care hospitals in the state.

Hartford Hospital handled 102,441 emergency visits and performed 13,494 inpatient and 22,287 ambulatory surgeries last year.

The hospital is rated as high-performing in the adult orthopaedics speciality, as well as procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, kidney failure, diabetes, lung, colon and prostate cancer surgery, stroke management, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and hip and knee replacement.

3. St Francis Hospital and Medical Centre – 617 beds

The St Francis Hospital and Medical Centre is a 617-bed general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital in Hartford, Connecticut.

Affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, the full-service acute care hospital forms part of Trinity Health of New England, a division of Catholic non-profit health system Trinity Health.

St Francis Hospital and Medical Centre serves as a regional referral hospital providing emergency, medical and surgical care across a wide range of specialities, including cardiology, oncology, women’s health, behavioural health and trauma care services.

The hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, knee and hip replacement, stroke management and COPD.

4. Bridgeport Hospital – 501 beds

The Bridgeport Hospital is a 501-bed general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital located in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The multi-speciality acute care hospital is affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine and run by non-profit health system Yale New Haven Health.

Bridgeport Hospital admits 23,000 patients and handles 350,000 outpatient visits each year. It is also home to the Connecticut Burn Centre, the state’s only burn centre.

The hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, knee replacement, stroke management and COPD.

5. St Vincent’s Medical Centre – 473 beds

The St Vincent’s Medical Centre is a 473-bed community teaching hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut, operated by non-profit health system Hartford HealthCare.

The multi-speciality acute care facility handled 53,515 emergency visits and performed 3,051 inpatient and 4,899 ambulatory surgeries last year. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, stroke management and COPD.

6. Danbury Hospital – 456 beds

The Danbury Hospital in Danbury, Connecticut, is a general acute care teaching hospital with 456 inpatient beds.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine and run by Nuvance Health, a non-profit healthcare provider that operates seven community hospitals and numerous outpatient facilities in western Connecticut and New York’s Hudson Valley region.

Danbury Hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, stroke management and COPD.

7. The Hospital of Central Connecticut – 414 beds

The Hospital of Central Connecticut is a 414-bed acute care community teaching hospital in New Britain, Connecticut.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and run by non-profit health system Hartford HealthCare. It includes the New Britain General Campus in New Britain, as well as the Bradley Memorial Campus in Southington.

The Hospital of Central Connecticut is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, stroke management and maternity care.

8. Norwalk Hospital – 364 beds

The Norwalk Hospital is a 364-bed general acute care teaching hospital located in Norwalk, Fairfield County. It is affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine and operated by non-profit health system Nuvance Health.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility is designated as a Level II trauma and primary stroke centre. It is also rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart failure, stroke management and COPD.

9. Waterbury Hospital – 357 beds

The Waterbury Hospital is a 357-bed general acute care hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut. It is the flagship hospital campus of Waterbury HEALTH, which was acquired by healthcare services company Prospect Medical Holdings in 2016.

The full-service medical and surgical facility is affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine and rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure and stroke management.

10. St Mary’s Hospital – 347 beds

Also located in Waterbury, St Mary’s Hospital is a general acute care community teaching hospital with 347 licensed beds. It is affiliated with the Yale School of Medicine and operated by non-profit health system Trinity Health Of New England.

The medical and surgical facility is designated as a Level II trauma centre and houses the region’s only paediatric emergency care unit. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to kidney failure and COPD.
