The cities of Louisville and Lexington are home to four and three of Kentucky’s ten largest general hospitals, respectively. The state’s remaining top three hospitals are located in Edgewood, Owensboro and Ashland.

Hospital Management has listed Kentucky’s ten largest hospitals based on numbers of beds as of last year, using GlobalData’s research.

1. Norton Hospital – 605 beds

The Norton Hospital in Louisville is Kentucky’s largest hospital, with 605 inpatient beds.

Affiliated with the University of Louisville School of Medicine, the multi-speciality teaching and research hospital is the flagship medical campus of non-profit health system Norton Healthcare.

Norton Hospital is designated as a primary stroke centre and known for clinical excellence in the areas of orthopaedic and spine care, as well as minimally invasive and cancer surgery. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, maternity care, stroke management, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and knee and hip replacement.

2. University of Kentucky Albert B Chandler Hospital – 569 beds

The University of Kentucky Albert B Chandler Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, is the state’s second largest hospital, with 569 acute care beds.

Operated by the University of Kentucky’s health and clinical system, UK Healthcare , the multi-speciality teaching hospital is home to the only Level I trauma centre in central and eastern Kentucky. The hospital also includes a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

University of Kentucky Albert B Chandler Hospital is designated as a Level I trauma centre and rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, colon and uterine cancer surgery, diabetes, hip replacement, stroke management and COPD.

3. St Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital – 534 beds

The St Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital is a 534-bed general medical and surgical facility located in Edgewood, Kentucky.

The full-service acute care hospital is part of St Elizabeth Healthcare, a Catholic non-profit health system that operates six hospitals in north Kentucky and south-east Indiana.

St Elizabeth Edgewood Hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, lung and colon cancer surgery, stroke management, COPD, pneumonia, back surgery, and knee and hip replacement.

4. Baptist Health Louisville – 519 beds

Baptist Health Louisville is a 519-bed general medical and surgical facility located in Louisville, Kentucky. It is owned and operated by Kentucky’s largest non-profit health system, Baptist Health.

5. Owensboro Health Regional Hospital – 477 beds

The Owensboro Health Regional Hospital is a 477-bed general medical and surgical facility located in Owensboro, Kentucky. It is the flagship hospital campus of Owensboro Health, a non-profit, community-focused health system based in Owensboro.

6. King’s Daughters Medical Centre-Ashland – 465 beds

The King’s Daughters Medical Centre in Ashland, Kentucky, is a general acute care hospital with 465 inpatient beds.

The UofL Health-Jewish Hospital is a 492-bed general medical and surgical facility in Louisville, Kentucky. It is affiliated with the University of Louisville School of Medicine and run by academic non-profit health system UofL Health.

The multi-speciality, quaternary care hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, diabetes, stroke management, COPD and knee replacement.

8. Baptist Health Lexington – 434 beds

Baptist Health Lexington is a 434-bed tertiary care facility in Lexington, Kentucky. It is operated by non-profit health system Baptist Health and recognised for clinical expertise in heart, cancer, women’s health and orthopaedic care.

The Saint Joseph Hospital-Lexington is a 433-bed regional referral hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. It is the flagship hospital campus of CHI Saint Joseph Health, a division of non-profit Catholic health system CommonSpirit Health.

The hospital is certified as an advanced primary stroke centre and rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, colon cancer surgery and stroke care.

10. Norton Audubon Hospital – 432 beds

The Norton Audubon Hospital is a 432-bed general acute care hospital located in Louisville, Kentucky. It is run by non-profit healthcare organisation Norton Healthcare.

The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility provides emergency, medical and surgical services related to comprehensive heart care, cancer treatment, and pulmonary, neurologic, orthopaedic and geriatric care.
