The city of Florence is home to two of South Carolina’s ten largest general hospitals. The state’s remaining top eight hospitals are located in Greenville, Charleston, Columbia, West Columbia, Spartanburg, Anderson, Myrtle Beach and Greenwood.

1. Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital – 864 beds

The Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville is South Carolina’s largest hospital, with 864 licensed beds. This includes 746 acute care beds, 65 psychiatric beds and 53 rehabilitation beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital is affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and operated by the state’s largest non-profit healthcare system, Prisma Health . The facility is also home to the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Upstate and recognised as a Level I trauma and comprehensive stroke centre.

Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiac arrest, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, colon, prostate and uterine cancer surgery, stroke management, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

2. MUSC Health University Medical Centre – 709 beds

The MUSC Health University Medical Center is a 709-bed tertiary teaching hospital located in Charleston, South Carolina. It is the flagship hospital campus of MUSC Health, the clinical health system of the Medical University of South Carolina.

The facility is designated as a Level I Trauma centre and houses South Carolina’s only solid organ transplant centre.

MUSC Health-University Medical Center is nationally ranked in the adult ear, nose and throat (ENT) and obstetrics and gynaecology specialities, as well as paediatric cancer care, cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, and nephrology specialities. 3. Prisma Health Richland Hospital – 641 beds

The Prisma Health Richland Hospital is a 641-bed general medical and surgical facility and regional community teaching hospital located in Columbia, South Carolina.

The multi-speciality medical centre is affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia and is Prisma Health’s second largest hospital campus in the state.

Prisma Health Richland Hospital serves more than 225,000 patients each year. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, stroke management and COPD.

4. Lexington Medical Centre – 557 beds

The Lexington Medical Centre in West Columbia, South Carolina, is a local, independent, non-profit hospital with 557 beds.

The multi-speciality hospital provides emergency care to nearly 100,000 patients, performs more than 25,000 surgeries and delivers more than 4,000 babies each year. It is recognised for clinical excellence in the fields of occupational health, cardiovascular and Alzheimer’s care.

Lexington Medical Centre is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, kidney failure, diabetes, colon cancer surgery, stroke management, hip fracture, back surgery and COPD.

5. Spartanburg Medical Centre – 540 beds

The Spartanburg Medical Center is a 540-bed general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

It is the flagship hospital of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System , an integrated health system that serves the Spartanburg, Cherokee, Greenville and Union counties in South Carolina, as well as North Carolina’s Polk and Rutherford counties.

6. McLeod Regional Medical Centre – 517 beds

The multi-speciality acute care hospital is run by AnMed Health, a non-profit health system based in Anderson County. It also houses the AnMed Health Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

8. Grand Strand Medical Centre – 403 beds

The Grand Strand Medical Centre is a 403-bed general acute care hospital in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

9. MUSC Health Florence Medical Centre – 396 beds

The MUSC Health Florence Medical Centre in Florence is a regional acute care facility with 396 inpatient beds. It is one of the 14 hospitals run by non-profit health system MUSC Health in South Carolina.

The hospital specialises in a wide range of clinical areas, including heart and vascular care, cancer treatment, orthopaedics, minimally invasive surgery, and women’s health and rehabilitation services. It is also recognised as an advanced primary stroke centre.

10. Self Regional Medical Centre – 358 beds

The Self Regional Medical Centre is a 358-bed general medical and surgical facility in Greenwood, South Carolina. It serves as a regional referral centre and tertiary care facility for a population of more than 250,000 in the Lakelands region of upstate South Carolina.

The independent, non-profit hospital houses a Level III adult trauma centre, a Level III NICU, a behavioural health unit and an MUSC-affiliated cancer centre. It is rated as high-performing in adult procedures and conditions related to kidney failure, stroke management and COPD.
