Top ten largest hospitals in Virginia by bed size in 2021

The state of Virginia, US, had 84 registered acute care hospitals with 17,730 licensed beds, as of December 2021.

The city of Richmond is home to two of the ten biggest general hospitals in the state while the remaining top eight hospitals are in Falls Church, Roanoke, Charlottesville, Norfolk, Boones Mill, Winchester, Fredericksburg and Newport News.

Hospital Management lists Virginia’s top ten largest hospitals based on bed size in 2021, using GlobalData’s research.

1. Inova Fairfax Medical Campus – 923 beds

The Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, located in Falls Church, is the biggest hospital in Virginia, with 923 beds.

Affiliated with the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, the multi-speciality academic medical centre is home to the Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, Inova Schar Cancer Institute, Inova Neurosciences Institute, and Inova children’s and women’s hospitals. The campus is also home to Northern Virginia’s only Level 1 trauma centre and specialises in heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplantation.  

Inova Fairfax Medical Campus is nationally ranked in the adult speciality of gynaecology and the paediatric speciality of neonatology.

2. VCU Medical Center – 820 beds

The 820-bed VCU Medical Center, located in downtown Richmond, is the second biggest hospital in Virginia.

It is the flagship hospital campus of VCU Health, a non-profit academic health system operated by Virginia Commonwealth University. The multi-speciality medical centre performs more than 24,000 surgeries a year. It is designated as a Level I trauma centre and houses the region’s only full-service children’s hospital.

VCU Medical Center is nationally ranked in three paediatric specialities, including nephrology, urology, and pulmonology and lung surgery. It is also rated high performing in five adult specialities, including cancer care, cardiology and heart cardiology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, orthopaedics and urology.

3. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital – 737 beds

The Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, located in Roanoke, is a tertiary teaching hospital having 737 beds.

Affiliated with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, it is the flagship campus of Carilion Clinic, a Virginia-based non-profit healthcare system. The multi-speciality medical and surgical facility houses a neonatal intensive care unit, Carilion Children’s Hospital, and the region’s only Level 1 trauma centre.

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is rated high performing in procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, colon and lung cancer surgery, diabetes, kidney failure, maternity care, hip and knee replacement and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

4. University of Virginia Medical Center – 671 beds

The University of Virginia Medical Center is a 671-bed general acute care teaching hospital of the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine in Charlottesville.

It is the flagship hospital of UVA Health and houses a Level 1 trauma centre, a nationally recognised cancer centre and the UVA Children’s Hospital with a 51-bed NICU. The university hospital saw 57,700 emergency visits and performed 35,459 surgeries in 2021.

University of Virginia Medical Center is nationally ranked in six paediatric specialities, including neonatology, cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and GI surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, and diabetes and endocrinology. It is also ranked high performing in the adult specialities of cancer care, orthopaedics, gastroenterology and GI surgery, urology, pulmonology and lung surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery.  

5. Sentara Norfolk General Hospital – 525 beds

The Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a 525-bed tertiary care hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. It serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS).

The multi-speciality hospital is run by Sentara Healthcare, a not-for-profit health system serving Virginia and North Carolina. The medical campus is home to a Level I trauma centre and the nationally recognised Sentara Heart Hospital.

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is nationally ranked in the adult speciality of urology. It is also rated high performing in the adult specialities of geriatrics, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

6. Lewis-Gale Medical Center – 521 beds

The Lewis-Gale Medical Center, located in Boones Mill, Virginia, is a general acute care, multi-speciality hospital with 521 beds.

It is the largest among the four hospitals operated by LewisGale Regional Health System, which is part of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) Healthcare, a for-profit health system that owns and operates 186 hospitals across the US.

Lewis-Gale Medical Center is rated high performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart attack and heart failure.

7. Winchester Medical Center – 495 beds

The Winchester Medical Center, located in Winchester, Virginia, is a regional referral hospital having 495 medical and surgical beds.

It is the largest among the six general acute care hospitals operated by Valley Health, a non-profit healthcare provider based in Winchester, Virginia. The medical centre is designated as a Level II trauma, chest pain and advanced primary stroke centre. It also houses a Level III NICU.

Winchester Medical Center is rated high performing in the adult specialities of urology, and gastroenterology and GI surgery. It is also rated high performing in procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, colon and lung cancer surgery, diabetes, kidney failure, stroke management, knee replacement, as well as pneumonia and COPD.

8. Mary Washington Hospital – 471 beds

The Mary Washington Hospital, located in Fredericksburg, is a general medical and surgical facility with 471 beds.

It is one of the two hospitals operated by Mary Washington Healthcare, a non-profit health system based in Fredericksburg.

Mary Washington Hospital houses a Level II trauma centre, a primary stroke centre, and a Level III NICU. It is rated high performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, colon and lung cancer surgery, diabetes, stroke management, hip and knee replacement, and COPD.

9. Chippenham Hospital – 466 beds

The Chippenham Hospital, located in Richmond, is a multi-speciality general acute care hospital with 466 beds.

Run by HCA Healthcare, the hospital is designated as a Level I trauma centre and provides comprehensive diagnostic, medical and surgical services across a range of specialities.

Chippenham Hospital is rated high performing in a number of adult procedures and conditions such as diabetes, heart and kidney failure, stroke management, and hip and knee replacement.

10. Riverside Regional Medical Center – 450 beds

The Riverside Regional Medical Center is a 450-bed general acute care hospital located in Newport News, Virginia.

It is the largest among the seven hospitals operated by Riverside, a non-profit health system based in coastal Virginia. The multi-speciality hospital is recognised as a Level II trauma centre, regional cancer care centre and comprehensive stroke centre.

Riverside Regional Medical Center is rated high performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart and kidney failure, stroke management and COPD.
