The state of Illinois, US, had 209 hospitals with 35,285 beds, as of December 2021.

Seven of the state’s ten biggest general hospitals are located in the Chicago metropolitan area while the remaining top three hospitals are in Oak Lawn, Peoria and Harvey.

1. Northwestern Memorial Hospital – 943 beds

The 943-bed Northwestern Memorial Hospital , located in downtown Chicago, is the biggest hospital in Illinois.

It is the teaching hospital for the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the flagship medical campus of Northwestern Medicine, a non-profit healthcare system that operates 11 hospitals in Illinois.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital is nationally ranked in ten clinical specialities, including oncology, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, urology, geriatrics, orthopaedics, and pulmonology and lung surgery. It is also known for organ and tissue transplants, and women’s health at Prentice Women’s Hospital, which is situated within the Northwestern Memorial medical campus.

2. University of Chicago Medical Center – 811 beds

The University of Chicago Medical Center , located in Hyde Park, Chicago, is the second biggest hospital in Illinois, with 811 licensed beds. The hospital is authorised for 506 medical/surgical, 146 intensive care, 60 paediatric and 53 neonatal ICU beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital is part of the University of Chicago (UChicago) Medicine, an academic and community health system that operates several hospitals and outpatient clinics throughout Chicago and its suburbs.

University of Chicago Medical Center is nationally ranked in six adult specialities, including oncology, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI Surgery, gynaecology, urology, pulmonology and lung surgery. The medical centre is also home to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, which is nationally ranked in four paediatric specialities, including neonatology, cancer care, gastroenterology and urology.

3. Advocate Christ Medical Center – 802 beds

The Advocate Christ Medical Center, located in Oak Lawn, is a multi-speciality teaching hospital with 802 licensed beds.

It is part of Advocate Health Care, the largest non-profit health system in Illinois. The Christ Medical Center is recognised as a major referral hospital for specialities, such as cancer and cardiovascular care, heart and kidney transplantation, neurosciences, orthopaedics, and women’s health.

The medical centre provides emergency care to more than 105,000 patients a year and houses one of the busiest Level I trauma centres in Illinois. It is nationally ranked in the speciality of gynaecology, as well as the adult and paediatric specialities of cardiology and heart surgery.

4. Rush University Medical Center – 727 beds

The Rush University Medical Center in Chicago has 727 licensed beds, including 356 medical/surgical, 132 intensive care, 72 neonatal and 59 rehabilitation beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital is the flagship campus of Rush University System for Health , an Illinois-based non-profit academic health system that also includes the Rush Copley Medical Center and the Rush Oak Park Hospital.

The Rush University Medical Center is nationally ranked in nine adult specialities, including oncology, cardiology and heart surgery, ENT, gastroenterology and GI Surgery, geriatrics, orthopaedics, gynaecology, neurology and neurosurgery.  

5. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital – 651 beds

Located in Park Ridge, a Chicago suburb, the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is authorised for 651 beds, including 313 medical/surgical, 74 intensive care, 62 gynaecology and 54 neonatal ICU beds.

It is a general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital run by Advocate Health Care. The medical centre provides advanced inpatient care in the areas of cardiology, oncology, neurosciences, orthopaedics, women’s health and foetal care. Its emergency department is also certified as a Level I trauma and comprehensive stroke centre.

6. OSF Saint Francis Medical Center – 649 beds

The OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria is a catholic, non-profit teaching hospital having 649 beds.

It is the biggest hospital campus of OSF HealthCare, an integrated health system owned and operated by the Sisters of the Third Order of St Francis.

OSF Saint Francis Medical Center provides emergency, acute medical care, and surgical services across a range of specialities, from breast health, cancer care and brain and spine surgery to orthopaedics, gynaecology and organ transplantation. The hospital is rated high performing in the speciality of urology.

7. Loyola University Medical Center – 547 beds

The Loyola University Medical Center , located in Chicago’s western suburb, Maywood, is a general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital, with 547 beds.

It is the biggest among the three hospitals run by Loyola Medicine , a non-profit academic health system based in Chicago’s western suburbs and a member of the catholic health system, Trinity Health .

Loyola University Medical Center is nationally ranked in three adult specialities, including gastroenterology and GI surgery, ENT, pulmonology and lung surgery. It is also rated high performing in cancer care, cardiology and heart surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics and urology.

8. Northwest Community Hospital – 509 beds

The Northwest Community Hospital is a 509-bed general medical and surgical facility in Arlington Heights, a northwest suburb of Chicago.

The multi-speciality hospital treats more than 20,000 inpatients a year and houses a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), a Level II trauma centre and a dedicated paediatric emergency department.

Northwest Community Hospital became a member of the Chicago-based non-profit healthcare network, NorthShore University HealthSystem, in January 2021.

9. AMITA Health Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center – 495 beds

The Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, located in Chicago, is a 495-bed hospital campus run by AMITA Health , a faith-based healthcare system operating in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.

It is the biggest among the 14 acute care hospitals operated by AMITA Health. The Saints Mary and Elizabeth Hospital specialises in minimally invasive robotic surgery, digestive health, cancer treatment, cardiovascular surgery and maternity care.

The hospital is nationally rated high performing in two adult specialities, including geriatrics, pulmonology and lung surgery. It provided emergency care to more than 66,000 patients and admitted more than 19,000 patients in 2021.

10. UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital – 485 beds

Located in the city of Harvey, Cook County, Illinois, the UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital is a general medical and surgical facility, with 485 beds.

The multi-speciality hospital is run by UChicago Medicine and is licenced for 315 medical/surgical, 25 intensive care, 21 obstetrical/genealogical, 78 acute mental illness and 46 rehabilitation beds.

UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital is nationally rated high performing in procedures and conditions related to kidney failure.
