Top ten largest hospitals in California by bed size in 2021

The state of California, US, had 331 general hospitals with 79,771 licensed beds and 76,627 available beds in 2021.

Hospital Management lists Florida’s top ten largest hospitals based on bed size, using GlobalData’s research.

The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego, are each home to two of the ten biggest general acute care hospitals in the state, while the remaining top four hospitals are in San Jose, Fresno, Sacramento, and Fontana.

1. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center – 976 beds

The Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, located in San Jose, Santa Clara County, is the biggest general hospital in California, with 1,160 licensed and 976 available beds.

The multi-specialty teaching hospital is affiliated to the Stanford University Medical School and is owned by the County of Santa Clara. It is the main hospital campus of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospitals and Clinics.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center provides inpatient medical care across a whole range of specialties. It also provides emergency rehabilitation, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, along with psychiatry and burn intensive care services.

2. Community Regional Medical Center, Fresno – 921 beds

The 921-bed Community Regional Medical Center, located in Fresno, is the second biggest general hospital in California, by bed size.

Affiliated to the University of California San Francisco Medical School, the multi-specialty teaching hospital is one of the four hospitals run by Community Medical Centers, a non-profit healthcare network based in Fresno, California.

The Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno is home to the Central California Neuroscience Institute, which specialises in the treatment of brain tumours, stroke, dementia and Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. The hospital also houses the Table Mountain Rancheria Trauma Center and Leon S. Peters Burn Center, the region’s only Level 1 trauma and comprehensive burn centres.

3. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center – 889 beds

The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, located in Los Angeles metro area, is a general medical and surgical facility with 889 licensed beds.

The multi-speciality teaching hospital is run by Cedars-Sinai, a non-profit academic healthcare organisation that annually serves more than one million patients across 40 locations in Southern California.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is ranked nationally in 11 adult specialties, including cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, orthopaedics, cancer care, ENT, diabetes and endocrinology.

4. University of California San Francisco Medical Center – 785 beds

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Medical Center, located in San Francisco, is a non-profit teaching hospital licensed for 785 acute care beds.

It is nationally ranked in 14 adult specialties, including cancer care, neurology and neurosurgery, cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and GI surgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gynaecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, rheumatology, urology and psychiatry.

The medical centre is also nationally ranked in ten major paediatric specialties. It houses the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, one of the best children’s hospitals in the country.

5. Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center – 780 beds

The Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center is a long-term care facility located in San Francisco. Owned and operated by the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the hospital is licensed for 769 long-term care and six acute care beds.

Laguna Honda was founded in 1866, and it moved to three new buildings on a 62-acre campus in 2010. It is one of the largest skilled nursing facilities in the US.

The hospital and rehabilitation centre provides therapeutic care for seniors and adults with disabilities. It specialises in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and other degenerative diseases. It also provides skilled nursing services for people with psychosocial difficulties.

6. University of California San Diego Medical Center – 757 beds

Located at Hillcrest in San Diego, the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center is a non-profit teaching hospital having 799 licensed and 757 available beds.

It is the biggest and one of the best general hospitals in San Diego, California. The multi-speciality teaching hospital is owned and operated by the University of California.

The UCSD Medical Center is nationally ranked in ten adult specialties, including cancer care, cardiology and heart surgery, ENT, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, gynaecology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, pulmonology and lung surgery.

7. LAC+USC Medical Center – 670 beds

The LAC+USC Medical Center, located in Los Angeles, is a public teaching hospital owned by the County of Los Angeles and operated by the Los Angeles County Health Services.

It is a general medical and surgical facility with 670 available beds. The hospital is licensed for 676 beds, including 600 acute care and 76 psychiatric beds.

The LAC+USC Medical Center specialises in a whole range of adult and paediatric specialities, from cardiology, neurology and oncology to orthopaedics, plastic surgery and dermatology. It also provides a wide range of rehabilitative services and houses state-of-the art burn and neurotrauma centres.

8. Sharp Memorial Hospital – 665 beds

The Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, with 665 available beds, is the flagship hospital campus of Sharp Healthcare, a regional health care group based in San Diego, California.

The medical and surgical facility is licensed for 862 beds, including 830 acute care beds and 30 rehabilitation beds. Its inpatient medical care specialities include heart care, cancer treatment, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, bariatric surgery and organ transplantation.

Sharp Memorial Hospital is also nationally ranked in pulmonology and lung surgery and rated high performing in two more adult specialties, namely geriatrics and orthopaedics, as well as in 13 procedures and conditions, including back surgery, hip fracture, kidney failure, heart bypass surgery and colon cancer surgery.

9. UC Davis Medical Center – 635 beds

The UC Davis Medical Center of the University of California is located in Sacramento, California. It is a non-profit teaching hospital having 635 available beds and licensed for 646 beds, including 627 acute care and 19 rehabilitation beds.

The general medical and surgical facility provides inpatient care in as many as 150 specialities. It is also home to the University of California Davis Children’s Hospital, one of the best children’s hospitals in the country.

UC Davis Medical Center is nationally ranked in nine adult specialties including cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, ENT, geriatrics, gynaecology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, and orthopaedics. It is also ranked high in paediatric specialties such as neonatology, paediatric nephrology, paediatric orthopaedics and paediatric urology.

10. Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center – 626 beds

The Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center, is a 626-bed teaching hospital located in Fontana, San Bernardino County, California.

It is one of the 39 hospitals owned and operated by Kaiser Permanente, a not-for-profit healthcare provider headquartered in Oakland, California.

The Kaiser Permanente Fontana medical and surgical facility is rated high performing in 13 adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gynaecology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, pulmonology and lung surgery.
