The state of Florida, US, had 295 registered hospitals with 61,876 licensed beds, as of December 2021.
The cities of Miami, Orlando and Tampa, are each home to two of the ten biggest general acute care hospitals in the state, while the remaining top four hospitals are in Gainesville, Sarasota, Lakeland, and Hollywood. In addition, this list includes eight non-profit hospitals and two public hospitals.

1. Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center – 1,738 beds
The 1,738-bed Orlando Health Regional Medical Center (ORMC), located in Orlando, is the biggest hospital in Florida as well as in the US. Run by the non-profit healthcare organisation Orlando Health, ORMC provides surgical, medical, rehabilitative, and emergency care across various specialities.
It is one of the six major teaching hospitals in Florida offering graduate medical education in seven specialities. The medical centre serves as the only Level 1 trauma centre in Central Florida and offers the region’s only air ambulance service, with three medical helicopters.
ORMC is ranked nationally in five paediatric specialties, including neonatology, paediatric cardiology and heart surgery, paediatric diabetes and endocrinology, and paediatric orthopaedics and urology. The hospital is also rated high performing in 13 adult procedures and conditions.
2. Jackson Memorial Hospital – 1,550 beds
The Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami is the second biggest hospital in Florida by bed size. Affiliated to the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, the tertiary referral hospital has 1,550 beds.
Jackson Memorial is the flagship hospital of Jackson Health System, which is a non-profit academic medical system governed by the Public Health Trust of the Miami-Dade County.
The multi-specialty teaching hospital also houses a Level 1 trauma centre called the Ryder Trauma Center, the state-of-the-art Miami Transplant Institute, and the Miami Burn Center, a leading burn care facility in the region. The Jackson Heart Institute of the hospital has a reputation for providing the most comprehensive cardiology services for patients of all ages in South Florida.
3. AdventHealth Orlando – 1,368 beds
AdventHealth Orlando (formerly Florida Hospital Orlando) is a general medical and surgical facility located in Orlando in Orange County of Florida. The 1,368-bed, multi-specialty medical centre forms part of the AdventHealth network of non-profit hospitals.
AdventHealth Orlando is recognised as one of the best hospitals for comprehensive cancer care, cardiovascular treatment, neurosurgery, gynaecologic surgery and organ transplantation in Central Florida.
The hospital is also nationally ranked high in three adult specialties including diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery, as well as in the paediatric specialty neonatology. In addition, the hospital’s paediatric unit is home to a Level 4 paediatric epilepsy centre, a paediatric heart centre, a paediatric bone-marrow transplant unit and a Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
4. Tampa General Hospital – 1,041 beds
The Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Hillsborough County, is a private non-profit hospital and one of the most comprehensive medical facilities in West Central Florida. It is owned and operated by Florida Health Sciences Center, an independent hospital and healthcare company based in Florida.
The multi-specialty teaching hospital is affiliated to the University of South Florida (USF) Health Morsani College of Medicine. It houses centres of excellence for neurosurgery and obstetrics, emergency, trauma and burn care. It is also renowned for its expertise in hip and knee replacement, foetal care, and organ transplantation.
Tampa General Hospital is ranked nationally in five medical specialties, including diabetes and endocrinology, ENT, gastroenterology and GI Surgery, orthopaedics, and rehabilitation. It is designated a comprehensive stroke centre and a Level I trauma centre. The hospital’s 32-bed NICU is the biggest facility of its kind on the west coast of Florida.
5. UF Health Shands Hospital – 1,030 beds
The UF Health Shands Hospital, located in Gainesville, Florida, is a non-profit teaching hospital of the University of Florida. Licensed for 1,030 medical/surgical and intensive care beds, it is the biggest among the seven hospital campuses of the University of Florida (UF) Health system.
UF Health Shands Hospital is nationally high ranked in seven specialties, including cancer treatment, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, nephrology, urology, pulmonology, and lung surgery.
The hospital’s current areas of emphasis include cancer care, women’s and children’s health care services, comprehensive heart care, neuromedicine specialties, orthopaedics, and organ transplantation.
6. Baptist Hospital of Miami – 948 beds
The Baptist Hospital of Miami is a flagship medical care facility of Baptist Health South Florida, a non-profit healthcare organisation in the Miami and South Florida area. The multi-speciality general medical and surgical facility is licensed for 948 beds.
Baptist Hospital of Miami is rated high performing in three adult specialties including cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, and pulmonology and lung surgery. It is also rated high performing in eight procedures and conditions related to knee replacement, stroke management, kidney transplantation, colon cancer surgery, and cardiology and heart surgery.
The hospital campus is home to three centres of excellence that include the Miami Cancer Institute, Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute, and the Miami Neuroscience Institute. The Baptist Children’s Hospital within the campus provides neonatal intensive care, paediatric oncology services and paediatric general surgical care.
7. St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa – 897 beds
The St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, is one of the 15 non-profit hospitals operated by BayCare Health System, the largest healthcare system in the Tampa Bay area.
Licensed with 897 medical/surgical and intensive care beds, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa is the second biggest general hospital in West Central Florida after Tampa General Hospital.
The St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa provides in-patient medical care across various specialties for children and seniors. It is rated high performing in ten adult procedures and conditions including colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, kidney transplantation and back surgery.
8. Sarasota Memorial Hospital – 895 beds
The Sarasota Memorial Hospital is a general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital located in Sarasota on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The 895-bed multi-speciality hospital is operated by Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, one of the largest public health systems in Florida which is governed by the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board.
The hospital campus houses the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute Oncology Tower and is the only hospital in Sarasota County that provides obstetrical services and Level III neonatal intensive care. It also offers psychiatric services for patients of all ages and serves as a Level II trauma centre.

9. Lakeland Regional Medical Center – 864 beds
The Lakeland Regional Medical Center is an 864-bed tertiary referral hospital located in Lakeland in Polk County, Florida. It is a flagship general medical and surgical facility of Lakeland Regional Health, a non-profit health system in Central Florida.
Lakeland Regional Medical Center is rated high performing in five adult procedures and conditions related to cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, knee replacement, and gastroenterology and GI surgery. It also operates as a Level II trauma centre and a Level III NICU.
It is the only hospital in Polk County to offer three hybrid operating rooms and a hybrid catheterisation lab. Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center is also home to the Hollis Cancer Center, which opened in 2003 and provides a range of cancer care services including medical oncology, haematology, radiation oncology, gynaecologic oncology, surgical oncology, and urologic oncology.
10. Memorial Regional Hospital – 797 beds
Located on the north-west corner of Johnson Street in Hollywood, Broward County, the Memorial Regional Hospital is one of the biggest general hospitals in Florida. The 797-bed medical and surgical facility is a flagship hospital campus of Memorial Healthcare System, a public healthcare system governed by the South Broward Hospital District Board.
The multi-speciality hospital is designated as a Level I trauma centre. It also houses the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute, Memorial Cancer Institute, and the Memorial Neuroscience Institute.
Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood is ranked nationally in two paediatric specialties, including paediatric cardiology, heart surgery, and paediatric orthopaedics. It is also rated high performing in eight adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, neurology and neurosurgery, and pulmonology and lung surgery.
