Top ten largest hospitals in Indiana by bed size in 2021

Indiana is home to 161 hospitals, including non-profit, government, and investor-owned hospitals, as of December 2021.

Three of the top hospitals in Indiana based on bed size are located in the capital city of Indianapolis. With 1,296 beds, the Indiana University Health University Hospital is the largest hospital in Indiana.

Hospital Management lists the top ten hospitals in Indiana based on bed size in 2021, using GlobalData’s research.

1. Indiana University Health University Hospital – 1,296 beds

Indiana University Health University Hospital (IU Health University Hospital) is an academic medical centre located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The hospital specialises in otolaryngology, dermatology, primary care, neurology, oncology, and obstetrics and gynaecology. It is one of 16 hospitals that are part of the non-profit healthcare system Indiana University Health’s hospital network in Indiana.

The hospital works in collaboration with the Indiana University School of Medicine through clinical research programmes that are incorporated into its patient care programmes. It is home to the IU Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, which is a comprehensive cancer research centre for the university.

2. Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital – 840 beds

Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital is a full-service hospital located in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is part of the non-profit healthcare system Ascension’s hospital network.

The hospital specialises in cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, orthopaedics, pulmonology, immunology, dermatology, endocrinology, neurology, urology, and ophthalmology. It also provides transplant services, imaging, radiology, testing and rehabilitation services.

Ascension St. Vincent is home to a Level I Trauma Centre, in addition to a burn centre, stroke centre, neuroscience centre, tumour centre, and a transplant centre. It sponsors the Rural and Urban Access to Health (RUAH) community-based care coordination programme, which aims at removing barriers and improving access to healthcare resources.

3. Parkview Regional Medical Center – 738 beds

Parkview Regional Medical Center is a general medical and surgical facility located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It is part of the non-profit health system Parkview Health’s network of hospitals and specialises in oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, primary care, and women’s health.

The hospital is home to the Parkview Cancer Institute, which specialises in specific types of cancer, apart from the Parkview Heart Institute that focuses on the early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation of heart patients. It is also home to the Parkview Ortho Hospital, which specialises in orthopaedic surgery and post-surgery patient care.

Parkview provides emergency ground and air transport services for trauma and critically ill patients through the Samaritan Flight and Ground Transport programme.

4. Deaconess Midtown Hospital – 555 beds

Deaconess Midtown Hospital is a short-term acute care hospital located in Evansville, Indiana. It is part of the Deaconess Health System, which provides healthcare services in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois.

The hospital specialises in cardiology including cardiac surgery and rehabilitation, oncology, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, orthopaedics, arthroscopy, emergency services, joint replacement, and spine surgery, apart from neurology.

It is home to a Level II Trauma Centre and provides other services such as radiology and imaging, wound care, haemodialysis, psychiatric services, and speech therapy.

5. Community Hospital Munster – 510 beds

Community Hospital Munster is a general medical and surgical facility located in Munster, Indiana. It is one of four hospitals operated by the non-profit healthcare system Community Healthcare System in Indiana.

Community Hospital specialises in paediatrics, obstetrics, oncology, orthopaedics, oncology, and neurology, apart from providing diagnostic services and rehabilitation services. The hospital also supports cancer treatment and research programmes conducted by the National Cancer Institute and other research institutes.

6. Methodist Hospitals – Northlake Campus – 494 beds

Methodist Hospitals – Northlake Campus is a full-service hospital located in Gary, Indiana. It is operated by the non-profit, community-based healthcare system, Methodist Hospitals. The hospital specialises in cardiology, critical care, diabetes, gastroenterology, neurosciences, orthopaedics, and pulmonology.

It also provides emergency services for a range of indications including motor vehicle crashes, head and neck injuries, paralysis, seizures, and stroke symptoms. Diagnostic imaging services, laboratory services, behavioural health services, and wound care treatment are some of the other services provided by the hospital.

The Heart and Vascular Institute at the hospital is accredited as a chest pain centre by the American College of Cardiology. The hospital’s diabetes self-management education programme is recognised and certified by the American Diabetes Association.

7. Franciscan Health Indianapolis – 485 beds

Franciscan Health Indianapolis is a full-service medical and surgical facility located in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is one of 12 hospitals that are part of the non-profit health system Franciscan Health. The hospital specialises in cardiology, oncology, neurology, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, pulmonology and respiratory medicine, weight loss and bariatrics, diet and nutrition, and sports medicine.

It also provides imaging and radiology services, physical therapy and rehabilitation services, pain management, and emergency medicine. The hospital offers a full-service heart and vascular care programme and has been recognised by the International Cardio-Oncology Society as a Gold Center of Excellence for its cardio-oncology programme.

8. Porter Regional Hospital – 446 beds

Porter Regional Hospital is part of the non-profit healthcare system Northwest Health’s hospital network. Located in Valparaiso, Indiana, it includes two campuses in addition to providing outpatient services.

The hospital specialises in oncology, cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurology, orthopaedics, and urology, apart from emergency and urgent care services. It also provides bariatric weight loss services, diagnostic imaging services, rehabilitation services, laboratory services, sleep medicine, and wound care.

Porter Regional is accredited by the American College of Cardiology as a chest pain centre and a breast imaging centre of excellence by the American College of Radiology. It has also received primary stroke centre certification from the Joint Commission, a non-profit accrediting body in healthcare.

9. Ascension St. Vincent Evansville – 432 beds

Ascension St. Vincent Evansville is a general medical and surgical hospital located in Evansville, Indiana, and is part of Ascension’s hospital network. It specialises in oncology, cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, paediatrics, pulmonology, diabetes, and bariatrics.

Other specialities and services of the hospital include radiology, medical imaging, mental and behavioural health services, rehabilitation services, surgery services, weight management, senior healthcare, women’s health, wound care, and wellness services.

The hospital provides healthcare services through the RUAH programme similar to other hospitals that are part of Ascension’s network.

10. Memorial Hospital of South Bend – 430 beds

Memorial Hospital of South Bend is a short-term acute care hospital located in South Bend, Indiana. It is part of the non-profit health system Beacon Health System’s hospital network and specialises in obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, oncology, orthopaedics, cardiology, and general surgery.

The hospital also provides services such as rehabilitation, emergency services, heart and vascular care, and genetic counselling. It is home to the region’s only Level II Trauma Centre and is also the only designated children’s hospital.
