Top ten largest hospitals in North Carolina by bed size in 2021

The cities of Winston-Salem and Charlotte each house two of the ten biggest general hospitals in North Carolina while the remaining top six hospitals are in Durham, Greenville, Chapel Hill, Asheville, Wilmington and Greensboro.

Hospital Management lists North Carolina’s top ten largest hospitals based on bed size in 2021, using GlobalData’s research.

1. Duke University Hospital – 1,048 beds

The 1,048-bed Duke University Hospital, located in Durham, is the biggest hospital in North Carolina.

The tertiary teaching hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic, medical and surgical services across a range of specialities. It admitted 41,274 patients and saw more than 1.3 million outpatient visits in 2021.

Duke University Hospital is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialities, including oncology, cardiology and heart surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, urology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

2. Vidant Medical Center – 974 beds

The Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, North Carolina, is a general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital, with 974 inpatient beds.

It is affiliated with East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine and forms part of Vidant Health, a non-profit hospital system in eastern North Carolina. The multi-speciality hospital admits more than 100 patients and provides emergency care to over 300 patients a day.

Vidant Medical Center is rated high performing in two adult specialities, including gastroenterology and GI surgery, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

3. UNC Medical Center – 950 beds

The University of North Carolina (UNC) Medical Center is a public academic medical centre having 950 licensed beds.

Affiliated with the UNC School of Medicine, the Chapel Hill-based multi-speciality teaching hospital constitutes the flagship campus of UNC Health, a non-profit healthcare system owned by the state of North Carolina. The medical centre comprises N.C. Memorial Hospital, N.C. Children’s Hospital, N.C. Neurosciences Hospital, N.C. Women’s Hospital, as well as the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

UNC Medical Center is nationally ranked in four adult specialities, including ENT, gynaecology and rehabilitation; and in eight paediatric specialities, including neonatology, cancer care, gastroenterology, nephrology, orthopaedics, pulmonology, urology, diabetes and endocrinology.

4. Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center – 921 beds

The Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is a 921-bed general acute care hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

It is the largest hospital of Novant Health, a non-profit integrated healthcare network comprising 15 hospitals and 800 clinics across North and South Carolina, as well as Georgia.

Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center is rated high performing in adult procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, stroke management, hip and knee replacement, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

5. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center – 885 beds

The Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a tertiary medical care facility and a teaching hospital having 885 beds.

It is a flagship hospital campus of Atrium Health, an integrated, non-profit healthcare system with 40 hospitals and more than 1,400 care locations across North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is home to the Brenner Children’s Hospital, the region’s only children’s hospital. It also houses a nationally designated comprehensive cancer centre and the region’s only Level I adult and children’s trauma and burn centre. The medical centre is rated high performing in the speciality of neurology and neurosurgery.

6. Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center – 874 beds

The Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center is an 874-bed tertiary teaching hospital located in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The medical centre specialises in a range of clinical areas, from paediatric, cancer and heart care to robotic surgery and organ transplantation. It houses the region’s only Level I trauma centre, as well as the Levine Children’s Hospital, one of the best children’s hospitals in the country.

Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center is nationally ranked in eight paediatric specialities and rated high performing in four adult specialities, including cancer care, gastroenterology and GI surgery, orthopaedics and urology.

7. Mission HospitalAsheville – 815 beds

The Mission Hospital, located in Asheville, North Carolina, is a general acute care hospital having 815 licensed beds.

It is the flagship hospital campus of Mission Health, a non-profit health system that operates six acute care hospitals and numerous outpatient centres in western North Carolina. The multi-speciality hospital houses a Level II trauma and comprehensive stroke centre and a Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It is also home to the Mission Children’s Hospital, the only children’s hospital in the region.

Mission Hospital-Asheville is one of the busiest surgical hospitals in the state. It is rated high performing in procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, colon and lung cancer surgery, hip and knee replacement, stroke management and COPD.

8. New Hanover Regional Medical Center – 800 beds

The New Hanover Regional Medical Center is a teaching hospital and a regional referral centre in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The 800-bed medical and surgical facility is a branch campus of the UNC School of Medicine and is run by Novant Health, a non-profit healthcare provider headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The hospital houses a level II trauma centre and provides adult, neonatal and paediatric intensive care in a range of specialities, including cancer care, neurosurgery and cardiovascular surgery.

Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center is rated high performing in procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, colon cancer surgery, diabetes, COPD, stroke management and knee and hip replacement.

9. Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital – 628 beds

The Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, located in Greensboro, North Carolina, is a multi-speciality teaching hospital and a referral centre with 628 beds.

It is the flagship hospital campus of Cone Health, a non-profit healthcare network serving people in Guilford, Forsyth, Rockingham, Alamance and Randolph counties of North Carolina.

Moses H Cone Memorial Hospital houses a Level II trauma centre and a comprehensive stroke centre. It is also home to Cone Health Women’s & Children’s Center, which opened in February 2020. The hospital is rated high performing in two adult specialities, including urology, and gastroenterology and GI surgery.

10. Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center – 624 beds

The Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center is a 624-bed tertiary hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.

It is designated as a Level III trauma centre and became a branch campus of the UNC School of Medicine in 2021. The hospital provides emergency, medical and surgical care across a range of specialities, from breast health, cancer and cardiovascular care to orthopaedics, neurosurgery and respiratory treatment.

Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center rated high performing in adult procedures and conditions related to heart failure, COPD and hip and knee replacement.
