The state of Pennsylvania, US, had 158 registered general acute care hospitals with 33,722 licensed beds in 2021.

The cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are home to three and two of the ten biggest general acute care hospitals in the state, respectively, while the remaining top five hospitals are in Allentown, Abington, Reading, York and Hershey.

1. Temple University Hospital – 979 beds

The 979-bed Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia is the biggest general acute care hospital in Pennsylvania. It is the main teaching hospital for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University and the flagship medical campus of Temple Health, a non-profit academic health system based in the Philadelphia region.

The hospital provides medical, surgical and emergency care in a wide range of specialities, from bariatric surgery and cancer care to haematology and organ transplants.

Temple University Hospital is ranked nationally in the adult speciality of pulmonology and lung surgery, as well as procedures and conditions related to cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, stroke management and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

2. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital – 908 beds

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, also located in Philadelphia, is the second biggest hospital in Pennsylvania, with 906 licensed acute care beds.

Affiliated with the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, the multi-speciality teaching hospital is recognised as one of the best hospitals in the Philadelphia metro area.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is nationally ranked for several specialities, including cancer care, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal (GI) surgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, and pulmonology.  It is also recognised as a regional Level 1 trauma and spinal cord injury centre.

3. UPMC Presbyterian Hospital – 900 beds

The UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, located in the Oakland neighbourhood of Pittsburgh, is a medical-surgical referral hospital affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The hospital complex comprises two connected buildings, namely Presbyterian and Montefiore . The multi-speciality tertiary healthcare facility has 750 medical/surgical and 150 critical care beds. It witnesses more than 32,000 inpatient admissions a year.

UPMC Presbyterian is recognised as one of the best hospitals in Pennsylvania. It is also nationally ranked for as many as ten adult specialities, including cancer care, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, ENT, gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics, urology, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

4. Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania – 807 beds

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, located at Spruce Street in Philadelphia, is a multi-speciality teaching hospital having 807 medical/surgical and critical care beds.

It is the flagship hospital campus of Penn Medicine , a non-profit academic healthcare system based in Philadelphia. Built in 1883, it is also one of the oldest hospitals in the country.

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is ranked nationally in 12 adult specialities, including cancer care, diabetes and endocrinology, cardiology and heart surgery, ENT, gastroenterology and GI Surgery, geriatrics, gynaecology, orthopaedics, urology, rehabilitation, pulmonology and lung surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery.

5. Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest – 729 beds

The Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown, Lehigh County Pennsylvania, is a general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital, with 729 beds.

It is the flagship hospital of Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), a multi-campus healthcare network based in the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania. It houses the region’s largest Level-1 trauma centre and is renowned for speciality services, including cancer care, minimally invasive and open-heart services, as well as comprehensive inpatient and outpatient burn care.

Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest is also home to the Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital, which has as many as 30 paediatric specialities and is one of the best children’s hospitals in the state.

6. Reading Hospital – 714 beds

The Reading Hospital , located in West Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, is a multi-speciality teaching hospital having 714 licensed beds.

Affiliated to the College of Medicine of the Drexel University, Reading Hospital is the flagship medical care facility of Tower Health, a regional, integrated healthcare provider in Berks County, Pennsylvania. The acute care hospital witnesses more than 33,00 inpatient admissions and performs more than 12,000 surgeries a year.

The Reading Hospital is nationally ranked in the speciality of pulmonology and lung Surgery and is home to the McGlinn Cancer Institute, Miller Regional Heart Center and the Beginnings Maternity Center, which houses the region’s only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).  The hospital’s emergency department is also recognised as a Level I trauma centre.

7. Jefferson Abington Hospital – 665 beds

The Jefferson Abington Hospital, located in Abington, a northern suburb of Philadelphia, is a regional referral centre and teaching hospital providing comprehensive inpatient medical care for people in Montgomery, Bucks and Philadelphia counties.

The 665-bed medical and surgical facility is a flagship hospital campus of Jefferson Health , a non-profit academic health network comprising 14 hospitals and more than 40 outpatient and urgent care centres in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Jefferson Abington Hospital saw about 31,000 inpatient admissions and 488,000 outpatient visits in 2021. It is considered a major regional referral centre for cancer and cardiac care, orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery. The emergency department of the hospital houses a Level-2 trauma centre, which is visited by approximately 77,000 patients a year. `              

8. Milton S. Hershey Medical Center – 628 beds

The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center , located in Hershey near Harrisburg, is a general medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital having 628 beds. It is the flagship campus of Penn State Health , a multi-hospital healthcare network serving patients and communities across central Pennsylvania.

The hospital provides outpatient and inpatient diagnostic, medical and surgical services across a wide range of specialities, from cardiovascular and cancer treatment to surgical weight loss and plastic surgery. Its emergency department houses central Pennsylvania’s only Level I trauma centre for both children and adults.

Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is nationally ranked in the adult speciality of orthopaedics. The medical centre shares a campus with Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, Penn State Cancer Institute and Penn State College of Medicine .

9. WellSpan York Hospital – 596 beds

The WellSpan York Hospital , located in York, is a 596-bed community teaching hospital serving a population of more than 520,000 in south-central Pennsylvania.

Affiliated to the College of Medicine of the Drexel University, the hospital is run by WellSpan Health , a non-profit, integrated health system serving the communities of central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland.

WellSpan York Hospital specialises in a wide range of clinical areas, from internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology to bariatric, orthopaedic and general surgery. It has 20 operating rooms and performs more than 7,500 inpatient surgeries a year.

10. Allegheny General Hospital – 576 beds

Located at East North Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Allegheny General Hospital is a 576-bed medical and surgical facility and a teaching hospital serving the residents of Pittsburgh’s North Side and surrounding communities.

It forms part of Allegheny Health Network (AHN), an integrated health network based in western Pennsylvania.

Allegheny General Hospital provides a range of specialised services, including cancer, cardiovascular, neurological and orthopaedic care. It is also recognised as one of the best hospitals in the state for heart and liver transplants.
