All states and territories in Austalia have signed onto the federal government’s new health reform agreement, which will enable public hospitals to have funding for the next five years.

This funding agreement will provide more services across public hospitals in every state and territory.

Under the new 2020‑25 National Health Reform Agreement, an estimated $131.4bn will be provided as additional funding to public hospitals over five years from 2020–21. This amount is in addition to the more than $8bn health investment by the Commonwealth to combat the Covid-19 response.

As per this agreement, a small number of very sick children across the country will receive lifesaving, high cost therapies such as immunotherapy, to reduce cancer risk free of charge.

Commonwealth and states have agreed to jointly fund this cancer treatment. Patients would otherwise have to pay around $500,000 per treatment for cancer immunotherapy without this support.

Furthermore, states are provided funding to offer more flexible care, including hospital care at home when patients need it. This will include rehabilitation post a stroke, at home. Approximately 50,000 strokes occur every year and this facility is expected to help such patients.
