US-based Beacon Health System has proposed to expand the Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, with an estimated investment of $240m.

Beacon Health System, which owns multiple hospitals in Indiana including Beacon Children’s Hospital, has submitted an application to Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative (READI) to secure funding for its proposed project.

The proposed 211,500ft2 Memorial Hospital expansion will see development of a new patient tower as well as a trauma centre, and upgrades across the hospital.

As per the plan, the hospital expansion is expected to increase patient care, while creating nearly 590 direct jobs within the hospital.

The hospital was founded in 1894 as a short-term acute care hospital, and now it has over 500 beds.

Beacon Health System also proposes to construct a $60m ‘Integrative Health and Lifestyle District’ just south of the hospital.

This mixed-use development would incorporate workforce housing, parking, retail, hotel, and commercial space, all anchored by a 50,000ft2 health and wellness facility.

As per the documents submitted to the state, the expansion of Memorial Hospital could get underway soon. The expansion work is expected to complete by June 2026.

In October 2019, Beacon Health System inaugurated $25.8m Beacon Granger Hospital, which is said to be the first small acute care hospital in Beacon Parkway, in the US state of Alabama.

Spread over a two acres land near the northwest corner of Beacon Parkway and Capital Avenue, Beacon Granger is a 32,800ft2 medical facility.

Beacon Granger features a 16-bed emergency department, which is equipped with diagnostic equipment, as well as eight in-patient beds.
