Beaumont Health and Universal Health Services have partnered to build a $40m, 150-bed mental health hospital in Dearborn, Michigan, US.
The partners, which established a joint venture to improve mental health services in the state, broke ground on the new more than 100,000ft2 hospital.

It is expected that the hospital will increase Beaumont Health’s existing capacity for inpatient mental health care by two times.
The hospital will house psychiatrists and internal medicine physicians, among other specialists, along with clinical pharmacists, psychologists, social workers and therapists.
In addition, an assessment and referral centre will be available to support the community and also Beaumont Health Emergency Centers.
The partners also intend to offer substance use disorder treatment for people getting mental health care.

By GlobalDataBeaumont Health CEO John Fox said: “Our mental health plans extend beyond the walls of the new facility. The new hospital will help us coordinate the entire continuum of services for comprehensive inpatient and outpatient mental health care, clinical training and innovative new approaches to accessing care.”
Beaumont Health intends to transfer its existing inpatient mental health services to the new location in the future and will add programmes for adult, paediatric and geriatric patients.
The organisation, in alliance with UHS, will create a telemedicine programme to support its nine emergency rooms and other patient care settings. Furthermore, the technology is set to provide quick remote access to health care providers and services.
UHS Behavioral Health division executive vice-president and president Matt Peterson said: “Integration of behavioural health and physical healthcare services can decrease unnecessary emergency department visits, reduce unnecessary inpatient admissions and enhance patient compliance with treatment leading to better clinical outcomes and higher patient satisfaction.”
Expected to start construction early next year, the hospital will become operational in 2021.
