Canada’s Interior Health has announced the opening of the expanded and enhanced emergency department (ED) first phase at Penticton Regional Hospital (PRH) in British Columbia.

Canada Health Minister Adrian Dix said: “Our government is committed to upgrading hospitals around the province, including Penticton, and I have been a strong supporter of this project from the start.

“This progress represents another step forward in ensuring quality healthcare in a modern, 21st-century facility for people living in the South Okanagan for many years to come.

“The expanded emergency department is part of Phase 2 of the David E Kampe Tower construction project and includes a new examination room and patient registration area, which means enhanced patient care.”

Under the first phase, major renovation will include the expansion of the pharmacy and materiel stores.

The work will be carried out over different phases, which is expected to allow the pharmacy and the ED to continue operations.

The different areas will open in phases from January next year to early 2022.

A nurse will check the patients for assessment, prior to registration, following which they will be sent to the appropriate level of care.

The David E Kampe Tower Project included the six-storey hospital tower and related parkade that debuted in April last year.

The project incurred a cost of C$312.5m, which was shared between the provincial government, the Okanagan-Similkameen Regional Hospital District, Interior Health and the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation.
