Construction has begun of the 150-bed new Massey Street Children Hospital in Adeniji-Adele area of Lagos, Nigeria.

The new Massey Street Children’s Hospital will be equipped to provide secondary integrated care services and acute care to inpatients and outpatients while helping in reducing infant and maternal mortality.

The present Massey hospital in Lagos was built in 1914 and served as outpatient clinic and referral clinic, until it was converted to a full-fledged pediatrics hospital in 1961.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said that there is an urgent need to upgrade the capacity of the hospital to provide quality services while meeting the needs of the steady and increasing number of patients.

Sanwo-Olu added: “Guided by the Second Pillar of our T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda which encompasses Health and the Environment, we are rebuilding, remodelling and repositioning the Massey Children’s Hospital into a Seven-Storey, 150-bed, Ultra-Modern and fit-for-purpose Pediatrics Programme and Emergency General Hospital.”

Upon completion, the new hospital is expected to be the biggest of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Several other projects were also launched by Sanwo-Olu inside the Gbagada General Hospital.

These comprise an oxygen plant, triage and oxygen centre, and the new headquarters of Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service.

Sanwo-Olu added: “These facilities will scale up our most recent achievements in the healthcare sector.

“Each of these centres is equipped with beds, oxygen concentrators, thermometers, drugs, and consumables.”

Construction also commenced on the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)-Chevron Doctor’s 24-unit quarters, which forms part of a corporate social responsibility project.
