CVS Health has teamed up with hospitals and healthcare providers, including UCLA Health, to provide solutions for creating hospital bed capacity in California.

The company’s infusion care business Coram has bolstered its existing home infusion capacity to help eligible IV-therapy patients shift to the home-based care environment. Coram will provide clinical monitoring, virtual support and oversight through telehealth to support existing personalised in-home care, coordination and administration of medications and supplies.

Currently, California is working to add 50,000 hospital beds to cater to the anticipated Covid-19 patients.

CVS Caremark and CVS Specialty chief medical officer Sree Chaguturu said: “We’re able to create a clinically appropriate and safe in-home care setting, so hospitals can focus on treating those impacted by Covid-19.

“Amid this unprecedented public health challenge, home can be the safest place for patients recovering from a range of illnesses and can also help minimise their risk of contracting Covid-19.”

Coram has teamed up with UCLA Health to identify and commence shifting stable patients to home-based nursing care.

Patients with conditions that may need infusion therapy, including anti-infectives and specialty medications for chronic condition management, will be considered.

Once at home, Coram’s specialised nurses will provide a range of care to patients, including daily visits and monitoring, medication administration, IV catheter line care, lab draws and educational support through telehealth.

Coram is implementing this programme in other markets of the country that have high rates of Covid-19 cases. It is also working with home health agencies to allow care for patients who require additional clinical oversight and monitoring.

CVS Specialty and Product Innovation executive vice president Prem Shah D: “Unprecedented challenges require innovative thinking and partnership as well as swift action. We’re deploying our clinical teams where the need is greatest, and our Coram nurses are doing an incredible job to help alleviate pressure on hospital capacity in some of the hardest-hit areas, including Los Angeles.”
