The European Investment Bank (EIB) has agreed to provide a $83m (€72m) loan to the Lapland Hospital District (LSHP) in northern Finland, to support a major upgrade.

LSHP, which operates the Central Hospital in Rovaniemi, will use the loan amount to upgrade the facilities at the hospital, build a new psychiatric hospital and extend the Central Hospital building.

The Central Hospital building was commissioned in the year 1988. The existing psychiatric hospital is located 30km away at a former tuberculosis clinic.

The upgrade and the extension of the Central Hospital building would create space for modern rooms for diagnostics and treatment.

LSHP will also modernise the intensive care department and four existing operating theatres.

The new psychiatric hospital will be built close to the hospital’s main building.

The upgrade and construction of these health care facilities will improve the situation for patients as well as for the staff.

Additionally, EIB’s loan amount will be used to construct multi-storey car park.

EIB vice-president Thomas Östros said: “Even before the ongoing healthcare emergency, supporting hospitals was a priority for the EIB, which has culminated in this loan to the Lapland Central Hospital.

“Comfort and accessibility for patients, as well as efficiency in terms of energy consumption and working environment for staff can definitely go hand-in-hand — as this project proves — and we are happy to support it.”

Last December, Tergooi, a regional hospital secured a €70m loan from EIB to support the construction of a new building at Hilversum location, the Netherlands. The financing also supported the development of a parking garage at the site.
