Holyoke Medical Center in the US has submitted a letter of intent and project proposal for the expansion of its psychiatric bed capacity.

The letter submitted to the Massachusetts Bureau of Health Care Safety and Quality notified the Determination of Need Program that Holyoke Medical Center will complete an application for another 64 psychiatric beds.

Upon securing approval, the hospital’s total capacity will increase to 84 psychiatric beds serving adult and geriatric populations.

Holyoke Medical Center president and CEO Spiros Hatiras said: “Our plan is to build a three level, 68,000 square foot, 84-bed behavioral health pavilion on our campus and near the Medical Center.

“We have completed a comprehensive review and been working with architects and community stakeholders on finalising building design.”

The proposal for the Holyoke Medical Center Behavioral Health Pavilion includes 48 adult psychiatric beds, 36 geriatric beds, and 4,000ft² of shell space for future expansion or other uses that would be determined later.

Holyoke Medical Center has partnered with Signet Health Corporation, assisting the hospital in the delivery of behavioral health services by offering quality management and consulting services.

The facility will be designed and built by full-service healthcare real estate development and solutions company Leo Brown Group.

It is expected to take 18 months to complete and become operational, after securing approval from state and local officials.

The proposed project is completely aligned with the mission of Holyoke Medical Center.
