Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) in the Indian state of Bihar will be redeveloped as the world’s largest hospital with an investment of Rs55.4bn ($760.76m).

PMCH will have 5,462-beds, an increase from the present 1,754 beds. Currently, the world’s largest hospital is located in Belgrade with 3,500 beds.

The state cabinet has given its nod for the redevelopment of the hospital, which was established in 1925, reported Press Trust of India.

Cabinet Secretariat Department principal secretary Sanjay Kumar told reporters: “The hospital would be redeveloped by Bihar Medical Services & Infrastructure Corporation Ltd (BMSICL) on a turnkey basis.”

This approval will help the state in providing medical services to more number of patients.

The number of MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) seats will be increased from the present 150 to 250, while post graduation seats will be increased from the current 146 to 200.

The world’s largest hospital will have 36 super speciality departments. Currently, it has eight super speciality departments.

Redevelopment of the hospital will take place in three phases in seven years. However, the government expects to complete the redevelopment work in five to six years.

The redeveloped hospital would be a green building and have a parking facility for 3,435 vehicles.

The world’s largest hospital will have 29 wards, including orthopedics (702 beds), obstetrics and pediatrics (610), general and pediatric surgery (522), general medicine (478 beds), and gynecology (462).

Spread over 7.244 million square foot area, the hospital will feature several amenities including fire safety provisions, medical gas pipelines, power sub-station, and wastewater and excreta treatment facilities.
