Healthcare services company Kindred Healthcare has expanded rehabilitation services at five of its long-term acute care hospitals in the US.

The company is adding 60-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation units at its hospitals in Houston metro area, as well as Fort Lauderdale, St. Petersburg and Green Cove Springs, Florida.

It is expected that the new rehabilitation units will be ready to accept patients in September this year.

Inpatient rehabilitation is intended for patients to recover from health conditions such as stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic injury, neurological conditions, amputation and trauma.

The new acute inpatient rehabilitation units will deliver interdisciplinary clinical and rehabilitation services required to improve function and independence to enable patient recovery.

These units are set to serve Kindred long-term acute care hospital patients, along with patients from other healthcare providers in their communities.

Kindred Healthcare Hospital division executive vice-president and president Pete Kalmey said: “These ARUs will enable Kindred to provide a broader range of acute-level, physician-led rehabilitation expertise while avoiding the disruption of transferring a patient to a separate facility.

“With enhanced capabilities, expertise and clinical integration – all under one roof – we will be positioned to deliver superior outcomes for our most clinically complex patients.”

Kindred Hospital Rehabilitation Services (KHRS) will manage and staff the new units.

KHRS, which treats more than 45,000 patients annually, helps nearly 100 hospitals in 27 states to manage acute inpatient rehabilitation units in their facilities.

Kindred Rehabilitation Services president Jason Zachariah said: “These new co-located ARUs will complement the care provided at these five Kindred LTAC hospitals, and enable us to provide a continuum of care for patients who require high intensity rehab services to continue their recovery.”

Earlier this month, Kindred signed an agreement with WellBridge Healthcare to acquire two behavioral health hospitals located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, US.
