Kindred Healthcare has entered into an agreement with WellBridge Healthcare to buy two behavioral health hospitals located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, US.

The two 48-bed hospitals, WellBridge Greater Dallas and WellBridge Fort Worth, offer inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services to adult and senior populations in North Texas.

Kindred Healthcare expects the deal to expand its behavioral health services.

The company delivers specialised, behavioral health services through Kindred Behavioral Health. These services include crisis stabilisation for acute mental health and substance use disorders, and suicidal thoughts or actions, among other behavioral health illnesses.

Kindred Healthcare chief operating officer Jason Zachariah said: “Our expansion into behavioral health services is consistent with our mission and is a natural extension of the high-quality services we provide in our long-term acute care hospitals and inpatient rehabilitation facilities.

“Kindred has a successful track record of incubating new business lines to address unmet healthcare needs, and this expansion extends that record and advances the company’s long-term growth objectives.”

The company plans to further expand its behavioral health footprint across the US via joint ventures and unit management with hospital systems. It will continue to explore acquisition and growth opportunities.

Behavioral health services are said to build on the company’s existing clinical and operational capabilities, while supporting its other facility-based healthcare services.

Kindred Behavioral Health senior vice-president and chief operating officer Rob Marsh said: “By expanding KBH, Kindred will be able to help more patients reach their highest potential for health and healing.”

The acquisition, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions, is expected to complete in the coming months.

Last month, Kindred Healthcare and Mercy Iowa City opened a new rehabilitation hospital in Coralville, Iowa, US.
