World’s largest Covid-19 care facility, named Sardar Patel’s COVID Care Centre and Hospital (SPCCCH), in New Delhi, India has started accepting patients.

Located at Radha Soami Satsang Beas in Chhatarpur area, the 10,000-bed facility was created by the South Delhi District Administration with support from the Union ministry of Home Affairs in ten days.

The hospital will serve as an isolation centre for mild and asymptomatic patients while 10% of the beds will have oxygen facility for patients who may experience severe breathlessness and require tertiary hospital care.

SPCCCH has been operationally linked to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital. The referral tertiary care hospitals are Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) will run the initial 2,000 beds with 170 doctors/specialists, as well as more than 700 nurses and paramedics.

A recreational centre has been built within the hospital for patients, along with a library, board games and skipping ropes, among others.

Furthermore, an e-hospital app being developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) will be used to manage the admission and discharge of patients.

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), in alliance with Tata Sons, also created a 1000-bed hospital in Delhi to cater to Covid-19 patients.

With 250 ICU beds, the hospital was built in 11 days. It will be operated by Armed Forces Medical Services and maintained by the DRDO.

In May this year, Tata Projects announced plans to boost hospital infrastructure in India by adding 2,304 beds across multiple locations for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.
