UK-based architectural design and engineering firm Foster + Partners has announced the start of construction of the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre Cairo in Egypt.

The new 300-bed cardiac hospital is part of the Aswan Heart Centre founded by Egyptian surgeon Magdi Yacoub. It will provide free treatment for patients in Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa regions.

Magdi Yacoub said: “Cardiovascular disease is currently the most important cause of disability and death with 80% of the burden affecting low- and middle-income countries.

“The new Global Heart Centre at the foot of the Pyramids designed by Lord Foster and Foster + Partners exemplifies the ultimate facilities capable of achieving the objectives of the Magdi Yacoub Foundation, in terms of care, training and Research, at the highest level, directed at people , who need it the most.”

Located near the Zewail City of Science and Technology, the new hospital will house diagnosis and treatment facilities on the ground floor.

The facilities will include an accident and emergency department, a outpatient clinic and rehabilitative departments. The surgical department and intensive care units will be co-located to maximise collaboration between researchers and caregivers.

Meanwhile, the first floor of the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre will have eight intensive care units and prefabricated operating theatres.

The hospital will also have support spaces for families, along with classrooms and other educational spaces for medical students. Additional single and shared patient rooms will be built on the upper floors.

Commenting on the new hospital, Foster + Partners Studio head Nigel Dancey said: “It brings together the latest research on biophilia and the positive impact of nature in clinical settings with our pioneering work on collaborative working environments that allow healthcare professionals to give the best care.”

In July this year, healthcare company Humania raised more than $100m in equity funds to expand the Saudi German Hospital network in Egypt and Morocco.
