Kindred Healthcare and Mercy Iowa City have opened a new rehabilitation hospital in Coralville, Iowa, US, with plans to start accepting patients from 28 May.

The 40-bed, freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital follows the first rehabilitation hospital opened by the partners in June 2018 in Clive, Iowa.

Mercy Iowa City Rehabilitation Hospital is meant for the treatment and recovery of people who have lost function because of an injury or illness. The hospital is said to provide patient-focused, specialised rehabilitation services.

Kindred Rehabilitation Hospitals chief operating officer Russ Bailey said: “This hospital is designed to offer compassionate care customised to patients’ unique abilities and goals, consistent with Kindred’s and MercyOne’s other jointly operated hospital in the Des Moines metropolitan area and Kindred’s partnerships across the country.”

The hospital houses private rooms, an acquired brain injury unit with a therapy gym, a therapeutic courtyard with golf, special rooms for dialysis patients and specialty programmes for neuro, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and amputation.

Mercy Iowa City Rehabilitation Hospital also comprises a transitional living apartment, which is said to be designed to resemble a residential apartment. This is intended to help prepare patients for daily living tasks prior to their discharge.
