Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has awarded a contract to construction company Merit for a new £30m hospital in Berwick, UK.

Plans for the project were given green light by the Northumberland County Council’s strategic planning committee in December last year.

The new hospital is being constructed with an aim to transform health care and patient experience for the people living in the area.

Additionally, Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has made further funding available to make sure the new hospital will fit for the future of health care.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Sir James Mackey said: “For too long, residents have needed a new hospital which is fit to deliver 21st century health care, now and for future generations, and is equipped to embrace the latest technology to provide our patients with the highest quality of care.

“Our new hospital will also enable closer working with primary care, again improving patient care and experience.”

The project is expected to create nearly 300 jobs per annum during the construction phase and support the local economy.

Work on the new facility to enable the demolition of the vacant parts of the existing hospital in Berwick is scheduled to commence this month.

This will enable the construction work of the new hospital on the northern end of the site to start this year.

According to Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, the existing infirmary was originally constructed in 1874 and is no longer suitable to deliver modern-day healthcare.

The organisation expects the new purpose-built hospital to re-provide all the current services along with an accredited endoscopy suite, to deliver health care services closer to people’s homes, and to house Well Close Medical Group GP practice.
