A new Dawson Creek and District hospital worth $377.86m has received approval from the British Columbia government and is set to be built at 11401-8th St on the northwest corner of the nearby Northern Lights College campus, Canada.

Investment will be made by the local government through Northern Health and the Peace River Regional Hospital District.

Construction of the project is expected to begin next year and is anticipated to be open to patients in 2025.

The 19,400m2 hospital will house 70 beds in single rooms with ensuite washrooms along with a dedicated space for laboratory and diagnostic imaging.

New emergency department at the hospital will be double the size of the existing one to accommodate 13 treatment spaces.

It is expected to increase its annual number of treatments from 18,000 to approximately 25,000 visits a year.

A maternity unit will include labour, delivery recovery, post-partum rooms, a nursery to support patients.

Mental health service delivery will comply to modern standards with an increase of beds from 15 to 18.

The new hospital will offer surgical services along with chemotherapy, ambulatory care, radiology, clinical support and pharmacy services. 

During construction, the facility will support 1,500 direct jobs and 900 indirect jobs opportunities.

Minister of Health Adrian Dix said: “I am proud to announce that the government has approved the business plan, and it is now full speed ahead for one of the highest-priority health capital projects in the North.

“We are delivering a new, modern hospital on a standalone site, a project that will increase necessary services, help retain health-care professionals and bring jobs to the region. The South Peace region, its patients and health-care workers deserve nothing less.”
