Penn State Health has topped out the Hampden Medical Center, a 300,000ft², three-storey acute care hospital, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Located in the Wentworth Corporate Center, Hampden Medical Center will provide residents of Cumberland and Perry counties and the broader Harrisburg area with access to the primary and specialty care services of Penn State Health, preventing the need to travel to Hershey.

Penn State Health CEO Steve Massini said: “Hampden Medical Center is one way we are delivering on the promise we made together with Highmark Health: Patients across the central Pennsylvania region will be within 10 minutes of Penn State Health primary care providers, 20 minutes of our specialty services, and 30 minutes of a Penn State Health acute care hospital.”

The $200m facility will comprise 108 in-patient beds, emergency department, physician offices, specialty in-patient services, as well as image and lab services and medical and surgical capabilities.

The facility will also feature an open medical staff, with plans to develop collaborative programmes between Penn State Health physicians and private community providers.

An attached outpatient medical office building will also be part of the Hampden Medical Center.

The project is expected to create several well-paying jobs during construction and for hospital operations.

Around 600 jobs are likely to be created during construction. Upon completion, the hospital will initially employ 650 people, which will be increased to 1,000 over the first three years.

Penn State Health has partnered with Cannon Design, Barton Malow and Alexander for implementing the project, which is expected to be completed in 2021.

Highmark president Deb Rice-Johnson said: “In less than two years, Highmark and Penn State Health have made significant progress in creating a world-class, community-based network of health care in central Pennsylvania.

“From providing grants to advance cancer research, to partnering with leading independent physicians, to establishing new facilities including Hampden Medical Center, we are committed to improving quality, access and convenience across the region.”
