Saint Gobain India, Gyproc, has set up a new 600-bed hospital in Surat, Gujarat in 17 days for the treatment of patients suffering from Covid-19.

The company developed 52,000ft2 of walled partitions across eight floors to convert an existing structure into a Covid-19 hospital.

Saint Gobain used specialised gypsum plasterboard-based drywall made of natural gypsum rock to set up the hospital. The plasterboard drywall technology is said to enable easy installation with reduced workforce.

For the Covid-19 hospital project, the total costs were reduced by 15-20% and time saved was three-four months compared to the required 18-24 months.

Saint Gobain managing director Venkat Subramanian was quoted by Hindu BusinessLine as saying: “The Surat hospital project was beyond possibility for brick and masonry as the government wanted to build the Covid-19 facility meeting WHO guidelines in less than three weeks.

“This was an excellent opportunity to display our expertise as well as the capabilities of gypsum plasterboard material and technology. We completed the project earlier than targeted.”
