Stantec has been appointed as the building services engineer for the Plenary Health consortium to carry out work on the new $1.14bn (A$1.5bn) Footscray Hospital project in Australia.

The consortium has recently achieved financial close on the new hospital, which is being delivered as a public-private partnership, with Western Health as the public operator of all clinical services.

The Victorian government selected Plenary Health to finance, design, construct, and maintain the hospital for 25 years upon completion of construction.

Under the contract, Stantec will be responsible for providing mechanical, electrical, communications, hydraulics, fire protection, fire engineering, acoustics, specialty lighting, and vertical transportation services to the consortium.

The consortium consists of Plenary Group as sponsor, investor, and asset manager, Multiplex as builder, Honeywell and Compass Group as facility services providers and Sojitz Corporation as investor.

The Footscray Hospital will feature 504 inpatient beds including 224 multi-day beds, 96 subacute, 54 critical care, 50 mental health, 36 same-day, 24 emergency department, and 15 drug and alcohol beds.

It will provide more inpatient, outpatient, mental health, palliative care and surgical services.

Additionally, the hospital will feature acute facilities such as mental health treatment spaces, specialists facilities including operational procedural spaces, clinical support services along with medical imaging and pathology, and teaching and training spaces.

The new facility will have the capacity to treat nearly 15,000 additional patients and approximately 20,000 extra patients at the emergency department each year.

Furthermore, construction work on the new hospital is set to begin shortly with completion expected in 2025.
